stpetre   12 #37 Posted March 13, 2015 Also the Victoria Hotel (corner of Sleaford Street) which for some reason isn't listed in the directory. All the same I have a hell of a hangover this morning..  Did you back to Lincolnshire on the train, and get the Bernard Road trainspotting view in reverse? hillsbro   32 #38 Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) Did you back to Lincolnshire on the train, and get the Bernard Road trainspotting view in reverse?Yes, but as soon as the Pacer pulled out of Platform 1 I got lost in a dream world. It really was 1964 and I was sitting on the wall copping 70012 John of Gaunt on the Harwich boat train, while 46128 The Lovat Scouts came out of the tunnel on a Bristol-Newcastle express. Then I woke up.. Here is a link to a picturesheffield.com photo of the Salutation after it had closed. To judge from Kelly's directory entries the Salutation must have closed some time between 1964 and 1970. Thanks for the photo link Hillsboro. To be honest with you I have more than a passing interest in the picture.O n the extreme right of the photo just passed the picture houses entrance there is a row of small shops just visible. The second or third one down was number 100 which belonged to my great grandmother which was a tripe shop.It was there were my mum was born in 1922 above the shop. She was illegitimate and in those days that was a very big issue, she lived there for four years in the care of her grandmother . hillsbro   32 #40 Posted March 13, 2015 ... Maybe they are included, but under a different name: the 'Lampool'...I had overlooked the Lambpool in the directory - it's shown at 291 Attercliffe Common (corner of Janson Street, opposite Carbrook school). Here is a link to a photo on the picturesheffield.com site. The pub closed in the early 1990s.Thanks for the photo link Hillsboro... I couldn't find any photos of No 100 on the picturesheffield.com site (the nearest being 90-94) though they have more photos in the Local Studies Library on Surrey Street. My mum, born in 1919, was also illegitimate though her parents "did the decent thing" and married when she was a few months old. jibbajabbast   10 #42 Posted September 8, 2016 My Late Nan was landlady of the Queens Head, with her partner. May Simmons and David Simmons. They were in charge in the early 90s this must have just been before it closed. I was only only 12 at the time but remember a nice open bar area and pool room off to the side. Absolutely loved the early mornings in there with free pool! Bacon flavour fries from the bar and a shandy as well while growing up!  I remember sleeping over used to spook me out. Not sure if this was because you had the liveliness of the bar and then after closing just silence so every noise was a scary thing haha
 Share this content via...
