spats   10 #1 Posted March 8, 2015 Can anyone here offer any help or advice? A vintage pyrene fire extinguisher was discovered tucked away in a box of donations at our charity shop. We have no idea whether it is full or not. We contacted The Environment Agency to ask how to correctly dispose of it. They suggested The Fire Brigade (who we have called 3 times to arrange for someone to come & collect it, but no one ever gets back to us) and tried a firm in Darnall who want to charge us £60 ! Any suggestions anyone? ps Carbon Tetrachloride is classed as a hazardous material in case anyone is wondering.
 Share this content via...
tzijlstra   11 #2 Posted March 8, 2015 It's vintage, sell it on Division Street genuinely though, I would have thought the fire brigade is indeed your first port of call.
 Share this content via...
Guest sibon   #3 Posted March 8, 2015 Hi Spats.  Carbon Tet is much more than just a hazardous material. It is pretty toxic and can cause some serious health problems if incorrectly handled.  It needs disposing of professionally. Here is some safety data, in case you haven't already checked.  The £60 disposal fee is pretty reasonable really. You could pay it and rid yourself of a nasty problem. Failing that, you could call the Chemistry Department at Sheffield University. They might be able to help you.  Good luck.
 Share this content via...

If it has Pyrene in it you will hear it shaking about. The extinguishers are in high demand by the army re-enactment crowd. They have regular meets and demonstrations in places like Norfolk Park. Take it along and let them take it off your hands. Value is around £20.
 Share this content via...
