CompServs Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 My home insurance is due for renewal later in the month and I'm not sure who, if anyone, I should add as a joint policyholder. My mother has a partial share in my house (80% mine, 20% hers) however she does not live here. I live with my (unmarried) partner. Prior to my partner living with me, I always had my mother listed as a second policyholder on my combined buildings and contents cover, however now I'm not sure what would be best. Reading most insurance policies, my partner is classed as "family" so any contents claims that should arise should cover her belongings as well as my own. However, I'm looking at Direct Line's Home Insurance Plus which has a number of added features, for example travel insurance, which only covers adults named on the policy, so keeping my insurance in mine and my mother's name, or even changing it to just mine, would exclude her from the cover. So, the question is, does my mum *need* to be named on the policy? From what I can gather reading various insurer's websites, my name alone should be sufficient to cover the insurance, and having my mum named simply makes it easier in the event of a claim as they would also deal with her. Is there any reason I shouldn't take out my new policy in mine and my partner's names so we can both take advantage of the extras?
Jeffrey Shaw Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Really, the property insurance policy ought to be in the joint names of both joint legal owners = you + mother. Your (non-owning) partner has no insurable interest.
