The best way to describe Derek would be "one of the lads" that's just what he was when he was in you're company, a man at ease being just one of the lads.

I actually met Derek a couple of months before his death (he was having a meal on Chesterfield Road with his family)

 

He shook my hand and was happy to talk for a while about his past. A smashing bloke and a sad loss!

I too had the pleasure and privilege of sitting next to Derek at a Cricket Dinner in 1993 when we talked about a number of things including playing in Longley Park in the 40's, his first marital home in Addison Road and that match against Barnsley when he scored 2 goals. I was 15 yds behind the goal on the Kop - I still remember them! Incidentally he was also a vice-president of the then Sheffield Cricket League.

 

A truly great man and friend of many.
