rudds1 Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Just putting a new consumer box in and wondering what's advantages of rcbo,s over mcb,s .
tlangdon12 Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Basically, each RCBO does the job of both a RCD and a MCB. The advantage of having a separate RCD/MCB protecting each circuit is that if one device trips, power to all the other circuits is not interrupted. This can have a safety benefit, e.g. lights will still work even if another circuit has tripped, or can be a convenience benefit, e.g. your freezer will have power even if another circuit has tripped. Installation of new consumer unit needs to be approved by Building Control. If you are using an Electrician to install the consumer unit they can normally self-certify their work, via their Part P Scheme.
FORE Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I believe RCBOs are difficult to find, come in different sizes(letters), single or dual (?) and expensive.
mafya Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 This explains what an RCBO is= http://www.havmain.co.uk/blog/electrical-services-and-electricians/what-is-an-rcbo-electrician/
tlangdon12 Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Single pole RCBOs in the ratings typically used in domestic consumer units are not that difficult to find; B&Q and Screwfix stock them. But it would make sense to choose a major brand of consumer unit to ensure that replacement RCBOs could be easily obtained if needed; e.g. Hager, Wylex, MK.
rudds1 Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 Thanks for the replies I will probley go for the rcbo,s
