Looking for help please, there's a water leak been coming through the ceiling in my daughters room and running through down the light fitting and dripping off the light bulb.

the leak is intermittent - its suspected a problem with the roof and due to rain but when its leaking there's been a lot of water.

It was first spotted when i turned on the ceiling light - was making strange noises and saw the water pouring off it. Obviously i immediately turned off the light and it makes no noises when off but is it still dangerous even with the light off (just at the wall switch)? I cannot cut the electric realistically to all the upstairs lights unless i need to - historically i could be waiting forever for my landlady to sort this! but if its dangerous i will obviously need to.

i've read the odd thing about removing to bulb to break the link in contacts, but if i do this will the fitting itself not become the lowest point for water to collect before it falls?? light fitting is a standard one like this Ceiling-Rose-A618-A619-A620-.jpg

any help appreciated as its due to rain again this weekend and really concerned as to whether its safe

Might be worth isolating the lights on the fuse box, stop electricity getting to them in the first place.

It might do all the lights upstairs, but if there's a leak in the roof it could get worse and effect other electrics - so might not be a bad idea.

The Landlord should get off their arse and sort it, the longer it's left the more expensive the repair is going to be.

Even if it's turned off at the switch with the way ceiling lights are wired I'd expect there to be a live wire in the ceiling rose..

Is there no way you can light a rocket under your landlady? This has the capacity to be dangerous in the extreme, especially as it's unlikely to be an isolated incident and is likely to happen every time it rains (assuming that it's rainwater coming in, rather than a leak in the water piping somewhere in the house).

thanks for the advice, obv i know water and electric is bad but now i know the light just being off really isn't enough i will make sure they don't leave without sorting it properly. someone is coming to look but sadly looking is often as far as things get

Its is dangerous if the light is switched on, if its not switched on then you are fine for the time being.

Its if the water goes to any of the other rooms and the lights are on when its dangerous and could cause a fire.

The worse thing tho is if the water runs down the wires to the light switch, this then could kill.

The supply to the upstairs lights definitely needs to be isolated, don't let the guy go until he's done this for you.

I have to disagree with this. There are usually 3 terminals in a ceiling rose or similar: one is neutral; one is permanently live; the remaining one is for the switch wire. So you can see that even if the switch is off there will be a terminal that is still live.
