El Cid Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Because of Michael Goves reforms, schools are down-scaling their efforts in subjects like hairdressing, beauty, child care, construction and car mechanics courses. Instead they are concentrating more on Maths, English and Science. Not every student will benefit from learning algebra and logarithms, so are the reforms a good thing since children will no longer gain experience from learning about everyday things such as cars and beauty. What percentage of jobs will algebra and logarithms be useful in?

El Cid Posted February 27, 2015 Author Posted February 27, 2015 100%. ................... Are you one of the 50% that does not need beauty treatment
Eater Sundae Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Would someone having their hair dyed be happy if the hairdresser was unable to fully understand the instructions on the hair dye, or how to mix bleach etc to the correct strength. Maybe logarithms are not needed by some people, but algebra certainly is. English and maths are real life skills.

WasThatWise Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 After dropping my car off for a service and on the way to my beauty appointment I stopped off at the shop to buy 4 apples and 3 pears which cost me 1.50 the apples were 25p each but I didn't see the price of the pears, however because of O and A level maths I know that 4A+3P=150 therefore 4x25+3P=150 therefore 100+3P=150 therefore 3P=50 therefore each I deduce each pear either cost 16.66 (rec), the checkout operator got it wrong or pears are sold by weight where as apples are priced individually.
Eater Sundae Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 What percentage of the population need algebra, as opposed to car mechanics? I hope the mechanic understands algebra, so he doesn't try to charge me for more spark plugs than my car has.
Lockjaw Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 What percentage of the population need algebra, as opposed to car mechanics? Probably a lot less than 100% but the fact remains that having studied algebra and logarithms is useful in all jobs.
truman Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 What percentage of the population need algebra, as opposed to car mechanics? Number manipulation is important in most jobs....that's really what algebra is isn't it?
WasThatWise Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Aren't GCSE qualifications mostly just an indication of your general level of intelligence with a further indication of specific ability with regard to the grade achieved. I passed English and Maths which I would say I have used since leaving school, History, Metalwork, Geology not that I am aware of Physics and Economics possibly without realising it.
