Lets just say my source deals with all homicides, before the suited officials manipulate them.;)

Oh! No driving deaths included in them.

That's not particularly convincing for the rest of us, you could just be making it up.

How do they manipulate homicide figures?

A useful breakdown Dannyno, thanks.

I'd also like to suggest that due to the low number of murders in general (in comparison to population size), all it takes is a couple of extra ones to "spike" the figures and make it look a lot higher in comparison to other places.

I think we'd need many years of data for an accurate picture.

How do they manipulate homicide figures?

My Partner is a forensic scientist first and foremost. She also manages forensic scientist for Strathclyde and as far down as Dumfries. I see her leave the house on many occasions over the year (on-call) to go to scenes, or her colleagues go out to incidents.

I asked her this morning and within seconds she gave this figure (at least 45) 23 years experience. I wonder how much experience in this field the "so-called" statisticians have?

If you don't believe her figures that's fine. I don't need to post stats, because this is as near to the true figure that you will ever get.

So, I don't know who produced those stats, they're wrong. Maybe they didn't want to put tourists off (commonwealth games) that year.:)

You do know who produced those stats, because I posted the documents and it tells you.

Anyway, thanks for clarifying your source, ie. it's a guesstimate by a forensic scientist/manager. She has no "figures", and it's not clear on what basis she is coming up with that number. Could just be suspicious deaths that upon further investigation are resolved, who knows? The figures that have been posted are for homicides of a defined sort, treated as murder/manslaughter. I see no reason to expect a forensic scientist to have secret knowledge, and every reason to be cautious about the accuracy of recall of individuals, regardless of how much experience you claim they have. People are bad at estimating, even forensic scientists.

Of course, you still might be making all this up. You might not even have a partner. At least published statistics can be scrutinised, which is ultimately the point.

Ok, found the city stats.

So in South Yorkshire, it breaks down like this (2013/14 again):

Sheffield: 11 homicides

Rotherham: 6

Doncaster: 4

Barnsley: 2

The stats I've found aren't quite the same as the stats the Star is reporting, homicides per million are different, but not far out - only a couple of points either way.

So Sheffield's 11 homicides makes our rate per million 19.7.

Here are the rates per million for the rest of South Yorkshire and some other places:

Sheffield: 19.7

Rotherham: 23.2

Doncaster: 13.2

Barnsley: 8.5

Bristol: 16.18

Bedford: 25.1

Luton: 34

Peterborough: 21.5

Hartlepool: 21.7

Middlesborough: 36

Copeland, Cumbria: 28.4 (2 murders out of a population of 70,300!)

Bolsover: 26.2

Torbay: 38

Bournemouth: 32

Darlington: 19

Cheltenham: 17.2

Gloucester: 32

Bolton: 17.9

Manchester: 21.5

Salford: 25

Gosport: 36

Hertsmere: 19.8

Kingston upon Hull: 19.4

Dover: 26.8

Lancaster: 28.6

Leicester: 27

Boston: 30.8

Lincoln: 21

Scarborough: 18.4

Kettering: 31.6

Mansfield: 28.6

Guildford: 21.5

Rugby: 19.8

Coventry: 18.6

Leeds: 17

I just picked some near or higher than Sheffield, for some kind of context.

63%, in fact. See above.

Dan

And bearing in mind that one or two extra murders in any year can skew the percentages, it wouldn't surprise me if deaths per million pop are pretty similar across many areas.

I still think Midsomer probably has the highest rate, though.

I still think the suburb of Hollyoaks in Chester is probably the most dangerous place in the world. According to this scholarly article their rate is 11,000 murders per million!!

lies damn lies and then there are statistics

The numbers game can be manipolated to show almost anything you want them to.

On average people have less then 2 of each limb.

Absolutely true but does not say whether that is mean meadian or mode, nor does it tell you the population size or inded any other factors.

BTW I think ; Making negative assumptions about the accuracy of the partner of another poster's assertions is not a very nice thing to do.

Hahaha!

A guesstimate:huh: You're wrong so get over it.

Do you know what a forensic scientists job entails?

You do know Glasgow is the busiest lab outside London?

Do you know Scotland is a world leader in forensic sciences?

I don't care much for your documents. My partner laughed at your pathetic effort to defend your stats. In fact your initial stats didn't even include Glasgow/Strathclyde.(how strange.)

You were riding high and enjoying the toadies fawning over you until i put you right. I guess you are one of those who can't admit when you're wrong.

http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/local/sheffield-officially-safest-large-city-in-uk-figures-reveal-1-5578578

SHEFFIELD has retained its claim as England’s safest major city - with residents running just a one per cent risk of suffering violent crime.

New figures from the Government, compiled from police forces covering the eight largest cities outside London, show Sheffield has the lowest rate of them all. In nearby Nottingham and Manchester, the chance of suffering a violent crime stands at nearer 2.5 per cent.
