Unfortunately in the real world wages don't cover expenses for most people. As a result people have to work over and above their normal working ours. Nobody wants to work extra hours. Me included. But unfortunately needs dictate. As with all public services and private services, inflation has far exceeded wage rises.

Would those criticising them be happy to work longer yet pay more for less?

 

I don't know the details of the firefighter' pension arrangements; but because of demographic changes (more and more older people, living longer) we're all going to have to work longer for less. I don't see why the firefighters should be exempt from that.

With regards to Corporal Jones and Pvt Godfrey turning up "Don't panic, the house is burning down, don't panic" (an exaggeration admittedly but a very real point behind it)
