Recommended Posts

Does anyone remember a Mrs Bartlett of Homestead Road, Sheffield. She used to have a brass sign on the front of the house saying 'Corsetiere' Trying to find her Christian name and the house number.

Can't help with Mrs Bartlett I'm afraid but I did go for piano lessons to Miss Dyson (Mrs Savage) on Homestead Rd. In the early 50's. Anyone else remember her.

Yes, she also had a brass plate on her wall. Think she was Ida Savage, Teacher of Piano! I think she had a son.

According to Kelly's 1954 directory, a Mrs.Muriel M. Barstow - Corsetiere lived at no. 52 Homestead Road with her Horace . A Mrs. Ada Savage, Piano Teacher lived at no. 26 with her Frank.

Hope this helps!

I went to St Patricks school in the early 1940s and used to walk past Ada Dyson's house every day. Outside was a shiny brass plate "Piano teacher". I thought that was too posh for my liking so when it snowed I chucked a snowball at her door. It shattered the glass. I ran off but shortly after was called up to the headmistresses office to be confronted by Ada herself. I owned up to my crime and agreed to pay for the repair to the glass out of my pocket money. I think it cost me 2/6 (two shillings and sixpence) Each Friday I knocked on her door and was invited inside to pay up. She wasn't at all posh but a really nice lady. I've always regretted not asking my Mum to arrange for me to have piano lessons. Sad I missed the opportunity to learn a skill which might have changed my life.
