small_hall   10 #1 Posted February 5, 2015 (edited) anyone know what they are doing? Spotted a few signs on the way home last night that said roadworks were due to commence on the 8th, and last for 4 months.  Also noticed that the traffic was far heavier than usual this morning on the way to work -around 8am ish ( although this could be unrelated) Edited February 5, 2015 by small_hall
 Share this content via...
tzijlstra   11 #2 Posted February 5, 2015 It's to make sure that the entire route from Hillsborough to Nottingham is one continuous stretch of roadworks. Especially designed to frustrate my life.
 Share this content via...
cytine   40 #3 Posted February 5, 2015 (edited) They are probably going to narrow the lanes, put in a bus lane, cycle lane and a few road humps/sleeping policemen. After all traffic cannot be allowed to flow in Sheffield can it? Edited February 5, 2015 by cytine
 Share this content via...
metalman   21 #4 Posted February 5, 2015 It's only been open about five minutes - surely it can't need 4 months of digging up already?
 Share this content via...
Bruce_Shark   10 #5 Posted February 5, 2015 This?  http://https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/dms/scc/management/corporate-communications/documents/transport/transport-planning/Bridgehouses-Traffic-Improvement-Plan/Bridgehouses%20Traffic%20Improvement%20Plan.pdf
 Share this content via...
metalman   21 #6 Posted February 6, 2015 Looks like it. So more bus lanes, a bus gate, more cycle lanes, less parking, banned turns and probably even less time to get through the lights on Mowbray Street (down to 1 second maybe?). Or in other words pretty much what cytine said a couple of posts ago.
 Share this content via...
ryder8904 Â Â 10 #7 Posted February 6, 2015 What a bloody joke. Sheffield city council really do hate the motorist.
 Share this content via...
Fantomas   10 #8 Posted February 6, 2015 If you'd looked at the plans you'd see that the changes also include removing a cycle lane and changing a road from one way to work in both directions, plus an additional bus gate to remove buses from the main flow of traffic.  All seems pretty sensible to me, but that doesn't suit the agenda of the moaners brigade. metalman   21 #9 Posted February 6, 2015 If you'd looked at the plans you'd see that the changes also include removing a cycle lane and changing a road from one way to work in both directions, plus an additional bus gate to remove buses from the main flow of traffic.  All seems pretty sensible to me, but that doesn't suit the agenda of the moaners brigade.  So if it's all pretty sensible, why not design it like that in the first place when they were building it? Or is this an admission that actually, the original design didn't work?
 Share this content via...
Fantomas   10 #10 Posted February 6, 2015 So if it's all pretty sensible, why not design it like that in the first place when they were building it? Or is this an admission that actually, the original design didn't work?  Yes, it is an admission that the original design wasn't optimal. But expecting something as complex as as road systems and traffic flows to be 100% on the first go is completely unrealistic - all the experience and modelling software in the world can't predict exactly what will happen. You can only tend towards a perfect solution, you can never actually get there.  I think it's a positive thing that the council are prepared to look at existing layouts and tweak them where improvements can be made. Would it be better if they ignored it?
 Share this content via...
AndrewC Â Â 307 #11 Posted February 6, 2015 Would it be better if they ignored it? Â Yes, because then people would have a stick to beat the council with. Â Why must you spoil people's fun with logic and reality!
 Share this content via...
arrowhead   23 #12 Posted February 6, 2015 looks sensible. But still wont solve my biggest gripe. Nursery Street outbound is a killer in the evening by car & bus. The lights are green for about 8 seconds at the brigehouses gyratory roundabout. 2 cars through and that's it and the queue just builds and builds.
