School with good Special Educational Needs

Recommended Posts

He doesn't have a statement of Sen, but I think I am going to ask the school to start the procedure to get him one. Where abouts is Wharnecliffe Side?

I've just had a look, think it's a bit too far out for me. I don't have a car and have to get to work for 9.15 after school drop off but thanks anyway

sheffield is really difficult to get statements but you can request a multi test and then fight it, to get a statement

Hi my son has asd and attends hillsborough school. I've found the school to be really good and they have put a lot of support in place for him. The one thing I have found really hard is getting my child a Sen there seems to be a lack of communication from rygate to the school and other agencies involved. I've been trying to sort this for over 2years and still no joy but I can not fault the school as they have been really good it's rygate I'm having the problems with.a good place to get In touch with is the parent partnership they did a lot in getting my son a lot of support in school and there a big help in dealing with Sen like they are with my child's at the moment I'm hoping my son gets his before he leaves hillsborough next year good luck I hope you get everything sorted out for your child.

My son is only in Foundation, but so far I am not finding them very good at all. They only ever come out to tell me if he's had a bad day, and they literally say that he's had a bad day. They never say things they've tried to get him through the day a bit easier, or different things they've tried etc. they just don't seem interested.

Will try the Parent Partnership as someone else has mentioned them to me as well.

Thanks

Here you will find flowchart of how the SEN system works and when you need to apply for an EHCP (Educational Health Care Plan as statement of SEN are no longer being issued they've been replaced), how to and how the process works. Its basic info but a good starting point.

Regarding Parent partnership, just be cautious, whilst they can and are very good, when all said and done they are employed by the LEA and whilst the are meant to totally impartial with their advice.....this isnt always the case, had i taken their advice my children would now be in a school totally unsuitable with zero support!

IPSEA on the other are totally independent, if you ever need to check anything regarding the SEN system then i would contact them over parent partnership, theyre a charity and run totally by trained volunteers, so getting through on their helpline can be a nightmare but well worth the hassle! They also have lost are really good advice and information on their website.

Linzday, you can request an EHC needs assessment yourself or through school - details here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/education/information-for-parentscarers/care-support/specialneeds/education-health-and-care-plan/request-assessment.html

I've found Mumsnet SN forums to be wonderful for help and advice about SENs, both in navigating school/SEN support and finding strategies for home.

My youngest is 3, just started Foundation and I suspect is on the spectrum (still trying to persuade someone to refer him for assessment!). I found your thread as I'm already frustrated with DS's placement and researching alternatives in the hopes of securing an EHCP for when he starts school.

Sorry I can't offer any firm advice or suggestions for schools, but feel free to PM me if you feel like a chat or rant :)

Look on this page, go to the A-Z at the top then you can check out the SEND provision for all the schools in Sheffield. If a school is missing check back in a week or two as it is a fairly new thing and school's have a lot to keep their eye on with SEND at the moment, due to all the changes.

Hi. When I was having issues with my sons school, I called the Autism team for advice and they went into school to help with strategies. The number is 2736412 and they have specialist ASD teachers for you to talk to.
