Well in that case the process is:

- find a car parking space in town

- Go to shop

- buy TV

- go back to car

- drive to shop and park outside it for 30 seconds on double yellows to load car up

- drive off

:hihi:

Or go to Chesterfield. Park outside shop for free. Go look at all goods available at your liesure. Buy TV. Nice man brings it to your car on a nice little truck and pops it in your car. None of that walking round town getting pizzed wet through on a day like this.

So you are unhappy to pay a couple of quid to park, yet you would be happy to pay more taxes to allow the council to purchase privately owned carparks which would cost hundreds of millions in property value and then compensation.

Dont make stuff up fool. I didnt say id be happy to pay an increase at all. The council should absorb it from its coffers. They could use the money they get from parking fines in other parts of the city and also all the money they make from bus lane cameras could be used too.

Back to reality....because that would never happen.

It would be pointless to make council provided city centre parking free, because the supply would massively out strip demand so you really wouldnt be able to park for free anyway.

As an alternative the city centre could continue its rapid decline. Retailers would continue to leave and set up elsewhere and not pay council tax in Sheffield. We all pick up the tab for maintaining a derelict city centre.

Places like that exists in Sheffield, you know. They are called "retail parks". :loopy:

Everyone says how bad our shopping and parking is compared to Leeds, do you get free parking there?

Nope. And havent the council there just closed the massive car park right next to the market?

The grass is always greener in Leeds

If you walk around the shops and restaurants at the dock area next to the Armouries, you're more likely to see tumbleweed than you are to see grass. Many units have remained empty since the area was built, and most of those which had tenants are now empty as well.

The people of Sheffield amaze me.

Crying over paying for parking, like youre the only people in the world to do so.

Its normal in most city centres to charge. Driving is not a right. There are multiple ways to get you in and out of town, without having to pay for the parking fees. Most people here refuse that option. You want to drive, you need to deal with the cost of driving. Paying parking is one of those things.

Where I grew up, you have to wait at least 12 YEARS to obtain a parking permit. Imagine the outcry from some of the people in this thread if that was the case here.

Cut and paste from each council's website

Sunday Parking Sheffield £1 flat rate all day (8am-8.30pm)

Sunday Parking Nottingham (8am-8pm) city centre zone

£1 for 2 hours 25p per additional 30 minutes

Sunday Parking Leeds:

e.g. If you want to park all day Sunday and into the evening then you need to pay £6
