What do you think to the bus interchange/train station link?

Recommended Posts

Who here commutes using both the bus and train stations and walks between the two?

What do you make of the covered walkway/pedestrian crossing route to the station?

I think it's ridiculous that Sheffield has spent all this money redoing the taxi rank and putting a lovely glass walkway from the station direct to the multi-story car park, yet the bus interchange is unsigned and hidden away down an alley - once you've got soaked waiting for the lights to change on the ring road crossing!

Does anyone have any photos of what it looked like in the past? I've heard the buses used to come right up to the station?

It looked pretty much like this.... Just the same really with a slightly more modern interchange building.

People still had to walk between buses and trains. Unless you are going to start moving a major trunk road and trying to open out the bus station even further towards the station building there is not much you can do.

Its not such a long walk between the two areas, little more than crossing a road really. For who struggle they can still get a selection of buses whose route passes the station frontage or use the supertram if its available to them rather than the bus.

The problem is Sheaf Street A61 which runs right past the station I'm not sure how they could make the area more pleasant without diverting this road, Hull has plans to put their main road through the city centre underground could that be achieved in Sheffield?

It's a nonsense that the 'interchange' is so-called because it's certainly not easy to change between different modes (bus/train/tram). It's no better in that regard than when it was Pond St bus station, except it's now easier to cross the road at surface level and the covered walkway is better than nothing.

Escalators up to Arundel Gate would be nice. Plus diverting more buses to actually use the bus station, sorry 'interchange'.

A lot was changed to make things more pleasant and safer for pedestrians and present a better image to people arriving in Sheffield for the first time.

There did used to be a bus stop outside the railway station about where the entrance to the Sheffield Tap bar is along with one on the other side of the road, with a subway inbetween. With changes to the road layout, removal of the subway and building work done by Hallam University those stops were removed and moved to the current location further up the road by the Showroom Cinema.

It should be noted though that the only key bus that used to serve the railway station was the old number 60 to Fulwood (now the 120) which started in the bus station, stopped at the railway station then spun around the roundabout (which doesn't exist anymore) and went up Flat Street. Much of the role of this bus linking the railway station with High Street, West Street and the University is now fulfilled by Supertram, which picks up at the back of the railway station.

I think the current layout is fine. The main problem I have is with EMT doing checks on the bridge between the station and the tram which is well documented on here. We paid all that public money out for EMT to take it as their own.

We also elected the Government who told EMT they have to install barriers and reduce fare evasion in Sheffield as part of their franchise.

We also foster too many people who believe that public money = public access, when it's completely and demonstrably nonsense.

If you are interchanging between bus and tram then Fitzalan Square is the tram stop that appears on the departure boards in the bus interchange and in many cases is more convenient...

The bus station has always been same distance from railway Station. The difference was that certain buses used to stop outside it. Then they used to have the city nipper which did same. It's not that far to railway station and in this country it's always wise to go out expecting rain and make provision, you'll seldom be disappointed or wet lOL

Public money should mean public access. Why should we the taxpayer pay for something we cannot use.

Try using that argument when you decide to have a look round an airbase.

Or prison.

Or nuclear power plant.

In the 1970s, there was a stop outside Sheaf House (British Rail Sheffield HQ - long since demolished) at which most (all?) buses heading along Queens Road used to stop, including the 512 Limited Stop to Chesterfield via Dronfield. It was certainly quicker than walking across to Pond Street if you had just arrived on the train, plus there were no trains to Dronfield in those days. Does anyone know why the 43 and 44 Stagecoach buses (and their "A" variants) to Dronfield have been departing from Flat Street for several years. The interchange always looks woefully underused, but it is a nicer place to wait (especially in the rain).
