shamal12 Â Â 10 #13 Posted July 7, 2011 Thanks to everyone for their help, I'm still in the process of getting quotes so haven't picked one quite yet. Sadly I don't have a large and menacing dog to hand, a large and very snoozy cat doesn't offer quite the same protection, unfortunately! Bilge   34 #15 Posted December 2, 2014 Spend the money on decent locks and good quality doors and windows instead. No-one takes a blind bit of notice of house alarms, they just annoy the neighbours when they go off.
 Share this content via...
mjw47   10 #16 Posted December 2, 2014 Spend the money on decent locks and good quality doors and windows instead. No-one takes a blind bit of notice of house alarms, they just annoy the neighbours when they go off.  I spent 33 years in the Electronic Security Industry working for three national PLC's before forming my own company.  In all that time I never came across a single incident where an intruder set off an alarm and continued to help themselves to property or to remained long enough to seriously trash the place.  The intruder is the only one that needs to take notice, they have no idea whether or not your next door neighbour is a little old lady or a sixteen stone psychopath who's your best mate.  You have an excellent user name.  Unless you live miles from any neighbour an aubible alarm will do, if not you should consider a remote connection.  Try Maysons Alarms.  http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=9&ved=0CFAQFjAI&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maysonsecurity.co.uk%2F2.html&ei=ivJ9VJvuAq6Q7Abk6oDgDg&usg=AFQjCNGgYl9-8eYyT_8e-gFNlXpmSN8QQQ&bvm=bv.80642063,d.ZGU&cad=rja  I used to work with John and he's not a bad lad (well for a Barnsley supporter )
 Share this content via...
Jomie   30 #17 Posted December 2, 2014 (edited) South Yorkshire Police endorse the use of intruder alarms - see here. Also, home insurance companies often give a discount to people with properly installed and maintained alarms - they would not do this if it wasn't a deterrent. Burglary Prevention - "If you don't have a burglar alarm, consider installing one. Get at least three quotes and seek specialist advice from companies who are registered with either the National Security Inspectorate (01628 637512) or Security systems and Alarm Inspection Board (0191 2963242)." We have had an alarm for many years and would not be without it. It picked up an intruder in our home and they beat a hasty retreat as soon as they triggered it. Bilge's comments about intruder alarms are without foundation.  OP - well done for thinking carefully about the security of your home. AndyP728 Â Â 10 #22 Posted December 3, 2014 Shield Alarms upgraded our system for us a month or so ago. We moved into our house at the beginning of the year and the system was very old and no longer worked. All existing wiring was tested and still functioned so they just replaced a couple of the sensors with pet-smart ones, fitted us with a new internal sounder/panel and 2 door sensors. We were very impressed with them; would highly recommend. Â http://shieldalarms.co.uk/
 Share this content via...
Jomie   30 #23 Posted December 3, 2014 Well that told me. Well taken Bilge. You do have a point about unattended alarms though and you are spot on about good locks for doors and windows.
 Share this content via...
mafya   248 #24 Posted December 3, 2014 I have a Honeywell wireless alarm that has a mobile SIM card in it that rings 4 numbers if it is activated or tampered with. No point having an alarm that only makes a sound IMO as not many people bother letting the police know unless it has been ringing for a couple of days.
