Why do Sheffield people still vote Labour?

Recommended Posts

The thing this Labour council profess to be left wing, even socialist, Julie Dore proclaims this whenever there are critics in the public gallery, yet they charge the highest amount of council tax they can to disabled and unemployed people(some councils don't charge at all) they have made massive cuts to adult care with many people now trapped in their houses and cannot get out. They also ask for really substantial financial 'contributions' towards their care, which is some cases can be as much as the care package allowed.

They don't seem to be a friend of disabled people, etc.

I'll vote Labour, warts and all, because the alternatives don't suit my values and world view. Labour were at fault when Gordon was Chancellor because he looked at the functioning of the financial industry and bought into the Thatcherite/ neo liberal agenda of minimising state interference, the mantra "leave it to the market, let the market decide". He should have realised that people who choose to work in at are primarily motivated by greed and money and left to their own devices would use every trick in the book legal and otherwise to get richer. I appreciate that films like The Wolf of Wall Street and Wall Street are caricatures but the basic message is there. I see the Tories as vulgar, crass, uncultivated and greedy, another caricature but that's how I see them. The Labour party does have some principled decent human beings such as Andy Burnham, John Mann and Tony Benn RIP.

Working class people who vote UKIP really need to think hard. European immigration has resulted in a net gain of 20 Billion pounds. Farage is a privately educated former banker and Thatcherite when it comes to the economy

Its reported today that RBS are attempting to recruit arts graduates rather than Business MBA's etc, because they are 'more rounded' and see 'the wider picture not just the bottom line'.

may be just PR guff though.

by rights half the public servants over there belong in prison for what they did/did not do.

Thats funny really because thats what I think of Labour.

I totally forgot that Labour politicians were the only ones found not to be abusing the expenses system a few years back.

I must have drempt up that a bunch of them ended up in prison for FRAUD.

Really. Doesn't matter that David Camerons father was a stockbroker "I remember when my father used to leave home for a hard day at the office" Boris has had more meetings with Bankers than anyone since he's been Mayor. That the previous Health Minister received £28,ooo for attending 3 meetings a year as advisor to the Board of Directors of a Bank so he could see "what the real world was like" before he came into office, he said this on BBC Question Time after being challenged by Dimbleby.

The Tories represent the establishment, the elite, inherited wealth, the powerful, the financial sector. Tories were claiming expenses to clean their moat and for light bulbs.

Look at some of their MPs, Zac Goldsmith who had all his wealth offshore until exposed.

Doing away with "first past the post" could change a lot.
I think the FPTP system suits the parties just fine, most times there's a clear majority and then the party can steamroller whatever policies it likes through parliament, so what if 80% of the electorate wanted someone else FPTP means they usually have the bums on seats and can do what they want.

I believe coalitions, like the one we have now are pretty much hated by MP's, I suspect this is because they actually have to turn up, discuss things, come to a compromise and actually work rather than simply nod when the party whip tells them before going to dinner with the next lobbyist, and they fear that a different voting system may result in more coalitions.

We were promised a referendum on proportional representation not long back and the conservative old guard fought tooth and nail, eventually threatening to revolt against the cabinet unless PR were removed from the choices available and we were left with FPTP or the Alternative Vote system which isn't that much different and I believe is used for electing PCC's. Which didn't stop the conservatives labelling it as confusing to the voter for general elections, and now we're stuck with FPTP for the next 30 years as the 'people have spoken'.

So yes it would be good if FPTP were replaced, but I can't see it happening in my lifetime.

So why are much things very much worse for the majority under 4.5 of tory rule?

Worse for who ? Things have improved greatly for me under this government thank you. No complaints here.

What specifically did the tories do that made your standard of living better?

I'm well better off this year than last year, but that is due to me, my hard work and promotions...nothing government did. If I'd still been in my old job I'd be considerably worse off.

He still hasn't told me about his dodgy fag seller....just shows what these people are like. Want to cut public services whilst at the same time don't want to contribute. If he was run over he'd be wanting an ambulance though.
