sjwilliams   10 #1 Posted November 12, 2014 Both me and my husband witnessed a very strange phenomenon at about 1 am today Stood outside when we saw a very bright orange glow in the sky, that bright I squinted. It looked like a sunrise speeded up. I tried to take a pic but caught the after glow as it disappeared. Just wondering if anyone else saw this
 Share this content via...

Dannyno   19 #6 Posted November 12, 2014 In handsworth and no it was too big an area to be just a lantern  Be careful about being so confident, your eyes can deceive you - it's very easy to misjudge distance and height - and also you don't necessarily know the effect of conditions on the way light behaves.  (I don't know what it was)
 Share this content via...
gremlin_mick   10 #7 Posted November 12, 2014 (edited) Theres a thread on here somewhere about these lights.  It's from the steelworks out Rotherham way. We see them regularly from Darnall.  Here we go: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1281535&highlight=orange+light Edited November 12, 2014 by gremlin_mick
 Share this content via...

sjwilliams   10 #9 Posted November 12, 2014 I can't say for certain but I have been talking to a few people and they say it could be a solar flare. I have to say it was far too big in the sky to be any of the above and for how it disappeared as quickly as it appeared.
 Share this content via...

Blast   10 #12 Posted November 13, 2014 If it's in the general Meadowhall direction looking from Handsworth it will probably be the steelworks adjacent to the old airport site.  They usually melt at night when electricity charges are cheaper.  It tends to be quite visible when the cloud base is lower - sort of 'reflects' off it and you can see the orange glow get brighter then subside over a period of a few seconds.
