Bright orange light in the sky

Recommended Posts

Both me and my husband witnessed a very strange phenomenon at about 1 am today

Stood outside when we saw a very bright orange glow in the sky, that bright I squinted. It looked like a sunrise speeded up. I tried to take a pic but caught the after glow as it disappeared. Just wondering if anyone else saw this

Was the glow low in the sky and were you looking towards Meadowhall?

Be careful about being so confident, your eyes can deceive you - it's very easy to misjudge distance and height - and also you don't necessarily know the effect of conditions on the way light behaves.

(I don't know what it was)

Outokumpu furnace at a guess.

That's what I was going to suggest, when they empty the slag pots.

I can't say for certain but I have been talking to a few people and they say it could be a solar flare. I have to say it was far too big in the sky to be any of the above and for how it disappeared as quickly as it appeared.

What direction were you looking, roughly?

If it's in the general Meadowhall direction looking from Handsworth it will probably be the steelworks adjacent to the old airport site.

They usually melt at night when electricity charges are cheaper.

It tends to be quite visible when the cloud base is lower - sort of 'reflects' off it and you can see the orange glow get brighter then subside over a period of a few seconds.
