Recommended Posts

How do you know the money comes from Council tax?

What is it about a local authoruty promoting public health that you think is a waste of time?

I Know.

Ask someone to read the OP to you, there`s a good lad.

If you're too lazy to find it yourself, I suppose.

For example

Sheffield has the same responsibilities obviously.

People should be in control of their own bodies. If anything needs to be done it should be the responsibility of the NHS, not the local council.

Again it would be nice if there was no obesity epidemic, but there is.

It would be nice if everyone obeyed the law but they dont.

As has been pointed out the Council are under a legal responsibility to promote the wider helath and welfare of its constituents because thats whats been decided. The NHS is for treatment and is not responsible for the wider level of health and welfare such as general physical activity. Why are you bothered who does it?

It used to be the responsibility of the NHS' public health service. However, as was pointed out above the Health and Social Care Act 2012 changed that by closing NHS Primary Care Trusts. Some of these staff transferred into NHS acute units but the Public Health function transferred to the local Council. Therefore the four South Yorkshire Council's (and others across the country) HAVE to have a Public Health service and part of this requires the promotion of good health such as stopping smoking, exercise etc

Indeed council's have also been given additional responsibilities regarding mental as well as physical health.

Unfortunately, I suspect that due to cuts from central to local government, mental health will, once again, be neglected.

Activity Sheffield was a godsend for us when the kids were young. Loads of

activities during the school holidays for them, they learnt loads and without it we would have really struggled with time off work.

Activity Sheffield do not take legal responsibility for the children. Legally the children can walk out of the sessions and run off. Not really good for childcare.

Anything done by the HHS is funded by general taxation or national insurance, which amounts to the same thing, and I think taxation like that is fairer because it takes more account of ability to pay.

Min. ages apply. This is not a childminding service, it's activity based.

My young teenagers were out of the house in the fresh air getting exercise

as opposed to playing on comp.games, hanging round aimlessly, or moaning about being out with parents.
