tzijlstra   11 #1 Posted October 18, 2014 Had four new tyres put on the Volvo today, I was rather shocked to find that despite the replaced set only being a year and a half to two years old AND HAVING HAD IT TRACKED at the time, the inside edge of the passenger side front and rear had worn away onto the webbing. The guys at Hawleys told me it could well be due to potholes throwing the tracking off...  Feel really close to sticking a claim in at SCC. Amey have been mucking about for over a year now to no avail, our road is still a pothole fest and all the roadworks with raised ironworks etc. surely don't help either, what with how long they are taking! Member   10 #3 Posted October 18, 2014 Ive had the tracking done plenty in the last 18 months. Youre doing well if you only had it done the once.
 Share this content via...

tzijlstra   11 #5 Posted October 18, 2014 Sorry, are you saying that you had the tracking set/adjusted about a year and a half ago?  I had new tyres put on and they checked the tracking then, can't quite remember how long ago, but somewhere like 1,5-2 years yeah. Lobos   10 #6 Posted October 18, 2014 I think you might have a fault with your suspension, I do thousands of miles a year on a lot worse roads then Sheffield in my vans as a courier,I have never had a tyre ware like that..I once had a faulty top suspension bush on my bipper and that wore the tyre in the way you say..the usual reason for tyre ware like you say is due to hitting the curb or over or under inflated tyres...have a look at the anti roll bar bushes they can cause uneven tyre ware as well. Janus   28 #8 Posted October 18, 2014 I know that these days there is what is referred to as 4 wheel tracking alignment , but I have never heard of a tyre on the rear of a car wearing like that due to tracking. (I am not an expert). Can I ask you, has the car ever been in an accident whereby the chassis could have been twisted slightly, as far as you know? Also when a car is driven on tyres that are grossly under inflated , the edge of the tyre(s) will wear excessively.
 Share this content via...

Guest   #10 Posted October 18, 2014 You'd have to have major problems for that to happen. I can't remember the last time my car had it's tracking done and in that time it's been raised and lowered and my tyres wear evenly.
 Share this content via...
haddy   10 #11 Posted October 18, 2014 Sounds like a problem with the car itself
 Share this content via...
tzijlstra   11 #12 Posted October 18, 2014 Yeah done some checking on specialist Volvo forums, it is a problem of this model and does indeed seem to be triggered by potholes - the tracking seems to come undone really quick for some reason which in turn can lead to problems with steering/suspension etc. So I suppose I will just have to keep a good eye on the wear and tear and take it in for re-tracking more often than I normally would.  Still thinking of writing a letter to SCC about it.
