Seriously, how do the police do the job.

I watched this and it left me feeling deeply saddened and somewhat uncomfortable, not angry. I'm a bit suspicious of the 'angry' reaction because I tend to think that frothing at the mouth and using words like 'evil' is a bit of a let-off to ourselves. People do horrible things, yet in many ways are no different to anyone else - that is the disturbing, uncomfortable thing for our shared humanity.

Hannah Arendt talked of 'the banality of evil' when analysing the career of Adolf Eichmann. I think the phrase, though used out of context, has some relevance here.

My farther used to be a policeman, he says he saw some dreadful sights and had to deal with societies most disgusting people. He's always said after being a policeman he doesn't regard all criminals the same, petty criminals and murderers/rapists are so set apart.

He retired from the police force many years ago and he still has images in his head of certain cases he dealt with.

Imagine 2 identical twins, only 1 day old.

Twin A goes to live with a well-to-do family; from the get-go, he is nurtured, loved, cared for, he begins to feel deep down he is supported and capable and loveable. He has great role models and mirrors much of the behaviour of those wonderful human beings around him. Oh lucky boy, he becomes a most wonderful human being.

Twin B goes to live with a trailer-trash family; they're all on drugs, eat low quality food, watch low quality TV. He learns he is not loved, not cared for, and his parents are always arguing, flighting with each other; depressed, no prospects, sometimes 'dad' is in jail for burglary, or worse. Oh the poor dear boy, constantly trodden in to the earth, in every way imaginable, how might he turn out?

While twin A is praised and loved, twin B is beaten down; how does that affect each emotionally in terms of their outlook and world-view etc?

Years later, they happen by chance to meet. Twin A feels all smug and superior and secretly takes credit for being a better human being that twin B. He doesn't stop for one minute and consider if they had been switched on day 1, if twin A had gone with the trailer-trash and twin B to the well-to-do family; how different things would have been. For at that point in time; on that day 1; the twins were qualitatively identical, innocent human beings...

Not all criminals are from bad families or poor backgrounds, nor are all good people from well to do families with a good upbringing. It's far more complex than that!!!

As the poster below says it's far more complex.

My dad's parents lived in a very run down council area, his family have spent time inside and quite a few never worked.

He on the other hand wanted better for himself, got out at 18 and started working. Although still a manual role he now runs his own business as has done very well for himself.

Not all nurture in my view.
