Plans to demolish Rare & Racy block

Recommended Posts

There is a petition to stop the demolition of Devonshire Street.

It does seem a shame yo knock down more of the city to replace it with nothing more than even more student flats. The city is dying.

Aren't they knocking down some shops and flats and replacing them with some more shops and flats?

Not a good idea to keep knocking down the few older buildings that we have left.

Whats wrong with flats in the town centre a lot of them take over run down areas. Ot would be in a sad state without them and the regeneration they bring.

Isn't the plan to replace a block of flats and some shops, with flats and some shops?

It'd be a shame to potentially lose those shops, but if the building is unsafe and not repairable then fair enough. Buildings don't last forever. Hopefully Rare and Racy and other other shops can find somewhere else to move to.

Whoops - just saw that my point was already made!

A story about this has appeared in The Guardian:

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/the-northerner/2014/oct/23/sheffield-devonshire-quarter-petition-development

from the article: "Murray claims the redevelopment will look almost identical to the current building”. So it'll be a building in the style of a Victorian row of shops but without any of the authenticity, builders nowadays cannot build a Victorian building, they just end up with some unconvincing mockery. If these people are going to kill off some high quality small businesses for yet another coffee shop and 'local' supermarket, they could at least do it with some high quality architecture, for a change.

I quite like the shops on Devonshire Green. Why not retain them and modernize the whole block it can be done. Sheffield has lost so many fine old buildings over the years.

Shops to be replaced despite 20,000 objections.

“Though occupiers of the existing retail units perfectly reflect the city’s aspirations for the Devonshire Quarter and undeniably have a part to play in creating an attractive, viable and varied city centre, the planning system does not exist to protect the private interests of one person against the activities of another.

“Provided a retail frontage is retained, the loss of the specific businesses is not a planning matter.”

The article only says the officers recommend acceptance of the proposed scheme as there is no legal justification to turn it down. The councillors could turn it down and let the matter go to appeal.

Depends what they replace and where they are, a lot of the time the existing buildings are full of character/history and could be refurbished instead of demolished..

For example a large section of the ''cultural industries quarter'' has had planning approved again for flats, when this area is full of artists, musicians, dancers, small workshops and larger joinery workshops etc. The area looks run down but is vibrant and most of the buildings are in use. a quick referbish of some of them could still bring in money , make the area nicer and retain some sort of culture rather than more bland flats in a dead area because all the buzz and soul has been kicked out to make way for residents.

(same applies to the rare and racey block :/ )
