Gobsmacked! Thought whenever the University said 'jump' the council asked 'how high?'!

That would make a nice wine bar.

 

The University were against the building of the student accommodation tower block on the Star and Garter site by the Art's Tower, but the council passed that so they don't always get their way.

 

Unfortunately in that instance I wish that they had!

I like the building. But not the pub.

 

Why?

 

Because it only reproduces stuff that I can get elsewhere.

 

If I want a choice of 3 or 4 beers on handpull, at 4.0% or thereabouts, there's every pub in Sheffield just about that I can go to.

 

Make it a bit more interesting - beer wise - and I'd be a regular.

 

That means:

 

Micro brew pub ales - range of strengths - range of styles. Something out of the ordinary. Maybe some tasty bar snacks too? Or is that asking too much?

I am just amazed the council have gone against the University for once.

 

I believe initially they did go along with the university, and then CAMRA initiated an appeals along the grounds the pub met the requirements as established in similar cases country wide.

I think you're asking for too much, considering the context. They have an excellent range of food options at very reasonable prices, and a good variation in beer styles (usually at least one bitter and one dark beer along with a pale and an IPA), at reasonable ABVs up to 5.x% and usually kept and presented well. They would struggle to sell 7.5% beers because a chunk of their market is academics having a lunch time or 5pm meeting and a swift pint. They do have several 'go-to' beers, I 100% agree with you, but they do rotate more, especially more recently since loosening their tie with Thornbridge.

Secondly, the University seemed to be suggesting that students do not form part of the community, which seems rather odd for a University that does not want to present itself as being in some kind of enclave.

For a start, I would say the University Arms is actually a pub that isn't dominated by students and has quite a mix of cliental, including a lot of University staff.

 

Secondly, the University seemed to be suggesting that students do not form part of the community, which seems rather odd for a University that does not want to present itself as being in some kind of enclave.

it serves the community as in its not just for students, where its situated obviously means it gets mostly student clientelle BUT like myself, other people can pop in if they want, if they live up there, or fancy a bit of a trek out of town slightly.

It's not the most amazing pub but it has a very varied clientele which I think is always good in a pub and fulfils the role of 'public house' in a way that should be appreciated and cherished. Go in there on a given night and you can find a book group discussing literature, people playing darts, some role gamers acting out a vampire adventure and an open mic night. Plus the Red Feather is very nice and they have a decent, if not stunning, rotation of beers.

No - but pubs can't cater for everyone's personal taste. If only having a choice of 4 drinks isn't enough then that's very specialist.

Lol - some of us remember when there were less than a dozen pubs in Sheffield with handpumps.

 

If my memory serves the Museum back in the late 70's was the first to have 4 real ales on handpump - Batemans, Castle Eden, Pedigree and a Whitbread? offering that slips my mind.
