Whats on fire in Chapeltown / north Sheffield?

Recommended Posts

The fumes are really bad, the wind has dropped now and it is just hanging.

Better reporting than the star supersonic, good pics and accurate information.

The wind is unusually blowing from the east - straight over my house :-(. Is a fine ash everywhere, and it stinks. The crew can only use so much water to protect the the local environment and not fill the stream with plastic waste. Was 2000 tons of plastic in an asbestos shed, and the paint sprayers next door went up too. Still shut off.

Have samples been taken? Does the ash contain asbestos particles?

"Have samples been taken? Does the ash contain asbestos particles? "

The fire service say the smoke/fog is non toxic, but advise people stay indoors as a precaution.

Asbestos is non toxic so I suppose technically they are right. It is carcinogenic though of course and if that roof were asbestos board I'd be worried myself, rightly or wrongly...

I always seem to be in the right place at the right time, I think the people must think I start these fires! But I live really close so I couldn't resist having a look!

The buildings are definitely the older ones, part of the old Arthur Lee complex I think. The corrugated roofing looked ominously like asbestos. Next door there just happens to be an asbestos removals company, they could be busy for a while! You could see the sign against the fire. Also on the estate is a 'fire prevention' company...

This is the view tonight, still burning away:

Still going now. Wind has shifted to the north, so Ecclesfield and Parson cross are going to have a bad day.

Than you for the updates, I've forwarded the link on to local residents. Seems to be less in the air tonight.

You can find out latest updates on this fire on our website here http://www.syfire.gov.uk/3611.asp

There seems to be no mention of asbestos in that link, yet on SKYNEWS it clearly mentioned the possible risk from asbestos, relating to this fire. Is there a risk?
