There are 2 chimneys (one is in use, the other not), i need 2 chimney cowls to cover the top of the chimney because dripping caused wet wall surface. My builder will help me fix them but I need to buy them by myself.

can you recommend a local shop to buy the cheap chimney cowls? Thanks.

Try Pagets on Broadfield Road.

You can just cap off the unused pot allowing for ventilation and fit a terminal vent to the one in use.

Are you sure the flashings or pointing are not the cause of the problem?

Thanks a lot for your quick response. My builder told me the rain leaking (wet wall surface and bedroom cover damp) is because of the chimney without cowls. I know nothing about the reasons. Recently my builder helped me re-point all ridge tiles and remove chimney pots and refit. but the problem is still there. so he asked me to buy these things to cover the chimneys (with air vented type).

I'd get a second opinion on that diagnosis.

Edit. If he's redone the stacks and flashings then it's the next step but I'd still suspect the water getting in via the top of the pot wouldn't be enough to cause the damp problems you describe.

Do you have a velux or dorma window near the chimney?

If so can you get a hose to spray the area around the flashings/brickwork?

Yes, exactly there is a quite small dorm window near the chimney. Can you let me know why spray the area using a water hose? to check if still water leaking? Thanks.

You've paid him to presumably fix a problem that still exists.

I'd ask him to carry out a water test on the stack & flashings before you spend more money.

A couple of cowls should be £70-80 to buy so not too expensive but if you still have water problems after getting them fitted will your builder return to attend to the problem?
