it was across from Firth Park Hotel, i took my driving test with them in a

I don't recall the Roxy School of Motoring as I moved to Shiregreen in 1958. I obtained a motorcycle licence in 1960. My car driving lessons were with Sheffield School of Motoring in 1964 in a Ford Anglia 105e....

 

I owned one in 1968.

Incidentally I was a Driving Instructor for 12 years between 1990 and 2002. Trained with British School of Motoring (BSM) and set my own business up in 1992. Really enjoyed that..

Hi Thanks Jean, Can't remember the intructors name or Mr Barton,

the time i booked my first lesson i had a broken big toe.

The bloke said why not lets do a lesson right now, i said what with a

broken toe, in them days hospital only put a pad under your foot to

take the weight off it. Well i did manage the set off up Page Hall and

first left onto Fir Vile on that was it dead easy haha. Brian. :hihi:

In response to your post 1759 here are a some of my cars from around half a century ago. I drove the Popular and then the A30 many times through Grimesthorpe to Sheffield Smelting and then Firth Browns between 1964 and 1966....

Many thanks for the wonderful photos you presented especially the one i was asking

about the 1958 Ford Popular 103e with the teenager leaning alongside,

( well age 20 , but near enough ).

Yes, it can take a while to finally complete a post, especially if, like on the one in question, I've linked to the pics on Photobucket and added my comments, then the internet link drops just before I finish and I lose everything and have to start all over, probably the next day . It's all very worth while though when I get some feedback like yours .

Like yourself i get a sense of achievement when overcoming it, patience is required and in

. . . sitting on the bonnet having a quiet smoke having presumably driven out into the

countryside from an hard days work at your beloved Firth Browns office, all on a warm

summers evening of the golden 1960's.

Just a couple of things Peter . . . the kettle on the grass in a box ,can't figure out why,

unless water for the radiator !

On the opposite side of the car , can't make it out clearly . . . is it a jack of sorts ?

 

Will reply to one of your other cars shortly . . .

. . . think you just might really enjoy this next one , when i get time to sort .

 

Oh , and i've got unfinished business with the Wincobank Lane cottages . . .

. . . but the photos you've produced have taken precedence first .

 

An old saying "Rome was'nt built in a day ".Neither was Sheffield .

Sheffield was built on seven hills just like Rome.

Wincobank is one of those hills.

Suppose Southey's a bit like Rome . . . he does'nt reply in a day, never mind eh ?

For convenience, here's the pic you mention again, haven't had a smoke for 36 years!......

It was on a Sunday teatime near Misterton/Gainsborough in late summer 1964 and when farmers would give you a smile and a wave if you stopped for a picnic in their field .

The photo was taken by the young lady who became my dear late first wife and mother to our three children and eventually had our eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Here the two of us are snapped at the same time and place.....

The kettle is on a primus stove, which was the norm at the time. It was in a tall biscuit tin which was supplied to shops when biscuits were sold loose. That was the desireable extra in those days. Part of one side was cut away for access and the trick was to face it away from any wind which may blow the flame out that you had gone through a series of lengthy and laborious processes to light .

The yellow and black item is one of two little folding stools which I painted in the only paint colours my Mother had in the cupboard at the time

I worked for Martin Woodward SOM from 1996 to 2015.

Roxy School of Motoring was owned by Bill Barton later his son became a HGV instructor. Martin Woodward also worked for Roxy many years ago.

I remember Martin Woodward. Don't don't recall Bill Barton but may recognise his face .

 

I left Sheffield City Council after 12 years as a Local Government Officer and trained as a Driving Instructor with BSM in 1990 and taught with them in Sheffield until 1992 .

I then set my own business up, using my initials, as 'PLR Driving Tuition' using mainly Handsworth or Manor Top Test Centres.

In 1999 I moved home to Gateford Toll Bar on the outskirts of Worksop. When I had aquired sufficient business there I taught only in Worksop until I finished in 2002. When my wife had set her business training company up working country wide in 2005 I then came out of retirement and worked assisting her. We're both retired now and live on the coast in North Yorkshire..
