Hi Brian, further to your post 1651 and my response response post 1655...

We had bonfires in the back yard. There was only our house, no 5, and Mr and Mrs Bell's, no 7, between the toilet block and the wall seperating us from the next yard. Therefore we had a little private bonfire and fireworks.

Dad used to make it in the upturned metal bin lid with some wood and coal in supported on few bricks. One year it got too hot and after roasting chestnuts Dad realised the tarmac had melted beneath it.

He mixed some mortar and skimmed it over the next day.:hihi:

I had a 3 wheeler bike after the scooter on my profile pic . I think Dad bought it from a man at the allotments on Earl Marshall Road. Second hand, at least, and no mudguards. I thought it was fantastic. :) After my brother let the rag and bone man have it for a baloon  my second bike was a 2 wheeler from the same man all refurbished and shiny black. Brilliant.

My third and last bike was a life lesson in trading up. I agreed to let Dad sell my Dinky Toys and Hornby Dublo train set at work as deposit for a new bike from Wiggys. Mother agreed to pay the HP. :D

Here I am with it in Firth Park in 1955 aged 13 going on 14....

Hi Jean,

Dennis Hale must have been in a different stream to me at Earl Marshall School therefore from what you say.

Here's my leaving pic taken in 1958 and the schools which I put on Earl Marshall Secondary thread some time ago. I'm middle back row....

I've located the school pics you mention. Could you guide me to your school pic and also your position on it please?

Peter.

Hi Peter.

Hope this finds you and your family well and in good health.

Thanks for the great photos.

Yes the cottages i dearly wanted to see are the one's you dug out for me

in the pic below.

Dare say Grimesthorpian forumers will remember them !

The cottages numbered 17,15,13,11,9 downhill from the old street gas lamp.

A great pre -war pic with the prominent gas lamp standing proudly.

Note , no TV aerials !

Peter.

Please accept my apologies for the delay of my response.

Have been in full training , plus doing various other things,

There just does'nt seem to be enough hours for me in a 24 hour day.

Coincidently 24 was the shirt number given to me for the "1964 STAR WALK ".

Hi Brian,

I'm afraid I don't know what's causing that, but I'm no expert.

I've clicked on them now and they come up ok.

However, I've realised that I get all the ads on now if I don't log into photobucket before looking at my pics on Forum. I've paid for ad free on photobucket and it usually works ok.

Hello- apologies if this has been seen before (I have shared on Facebook)

I am in the process of writing a book about Sheffield pubs and I am looking for any stories or photos of pubs at Grimesthorpe. My father in law, Bob Crawley, grew up near the Old Bowling Green pub and has shared a few stories with me but any info (and especially pictures) people could provide by pm (I can provide an email if required) Im particularly looking for info on the Beehive, Brunswick, Crown, Ellesmere, Hodson Hotel, Prince of Wales, Victoria, Wellington, Who Can Tell Thanks!

I have a fair bit already but I have a number of blanks- particularly around the dates these pubs shut/ when demolition of surrounding housing took place.

Any help appreciated

Peter.

In the 50/60s the end cottage on the right was occupied by a family, name of Brand. Two sons I think were Malcom and Rodney.

The son living in the cottage on the left was Donald Pretty.

Hi Brian,

Yes, there's so much intrusion across the pics on Photobucket now. :(.

I'm going to try and find a different way of putting my personal pics on Forum before I put any more on.

PS I've responded to you on Firth Brown thread .

Is that where Grimesthorpe boys club was ? Sure there was some pigeon sheds at back of there the name George Lathem rings a bell

Hi gaz 786,

The sheds at the back of the demolished Colvers Yard could be pigeon sheds??...

Here's are some pics of Colvers Yard.....

I don't know where the boys club was but no doubt some other old Grimesthorpians will. :)

Hi Brian and anyone who looks on the Forum at posted pics off Photobucket.

I've noticed that on this Forum there are a lot of ads appearing now intruding into the pics. on Photobucket.

It's my experience that to remove these from the screen one either has to register with Photobucket and also pay a fee to remove ads. Alternatively follow the procedure below, which may be of help to some. It's rather fiddley but becomes less so with practice :).

a Click pic link on post to bring pic up on screen.

b Move cursor out of the way (suggest top of screen).

c Wait for all ads to stabilise.

d Hover cursor slightly above the top of an ad until a 'delete' cross comes up. Then click on the cross to remove the ad.

e Do the same process with remaining ads.

NOTE. Ads on the right of screen cannot be removed.

A stable pic should now be available but the same procedure will have to be repeated for further pics.

Grimesthorpe Boys Club. I'm sorry but can't get the photo any bigger. There's a better photo on Picture Sheffield (Grimesthorpe).

The building was originally the Sunday School for the chapel further up Wincobank Lane then became the offices of James Childs.

Hi Peter ,

Please view pic showing the "cottages " taken from the Hillside, Wincobank Lane.1959 .

http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s20654&pos=1&action=zoom&id=23155.

Showing the pint bottles of milk on the doorsteps of numbers 17 and 13 .

Presumably delivered by a three - wheeler milk - float .

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_float#/media/File%3ADairy_Crest_Ex_Unigate_Wales_And_Edwards_Rangemaster_Milk_Float.jpg

Long gone are the days of the three - wheeler milk- float .

No doubt Peter , you'll have vivid memories of one making deliveries around Adsetts Street

in and around the areas in your boyhood days.

Come to think of it . . . say in the middle of the cold , raw , snowy , icy winters

of the 1950's and1960's one wonders how one of these milk - floats and not forgetting

the roundsman ever made it from the bottom of Grimesthorpe Road to the summit

in one piece . . . must have been hair - raising .

Being aware the milk - floats were electric - charged , they were known at times to

run out of power towards ends of the rounds .

Come to think of it . . . i recently read about a young fellow being a delivery roundsman

for a company . . . something like "Ever Ready " batteries . . . .

I wonder who he might be . . . any ideas Peter ? ☺

The extremes .

Hi Mick,

I'd not spotted the milk bottles before!

In my early days, early/mid 1940s, I remember milk being delivered on Adsetts Street like this below. Not quite as far back as the first pic though. It was a little van, but they did use measuring jugs :). .....

Regarding the young man with his Ever Ready van, how about this pic c1970.

Looks very much like me :hihi:.....

Hi cat631,

I've taken the liberty of putting the Picture Sheffield link on below.

I think the notes aren't quite correct as my 1991 A-Z street atlas shows Range Road leading off Wincobank Lane, (not Grimesthorpe Road), to the left and to where Colvers Yard was.
