stpeter is right, however Enzers chip shop is a bit lower down from where the people are standing. I think the shop was owned by someone called Holmes, I don't know the people in the picture. Jean J

Thanks for that stpetre and Jean, I can work it all out now :)

Leonard Enzer is shown as proprietor of the chip shop in Jan 1971 on the left of this pic looking in the opposite direction to Brian's pic. and further down towards Petre Street.

Hi Brian,

I'm enjoying positioning the pics which are on your post 1693. Those, plus the Who Can Tell pub on your post 1689 and subsequent posts, mean that area all becomes clear to me. :)

Yes, I see Petre Street and the bottom part of Botham Street on the pic on my post 1697.

Just to clarify a little more, was the Crown pub at the junction of the bottom part of Botham Street and about half way up Carlisle Road (known as Crown Hill)?

The crossroads with Petre Street and the top part of Botham Street to the right, and the bottom part of Botham Street to the left which leads to Carlise Road can be seen on this pic...

The Crown pub was on Carlisle Road (Crown Hill) at the Sharp Street corner. If I recall, it was an Hope and Anchor pub.

Hi Peter, On me picture No1693 where the ladies are stood the chip shop

was just there and it had about 3 steps to climb, look on your pic No1697

you can see a sign on the wall left of Botham st that was the chippy.

I also like your other picture, times many i've hung around there and

catching bus to town. Brian. :|

I've asked this question before, does anyone have a photo of The Crown please?

Also The Hodson which I believe was on or around Adsettes Street?

I've found an old aerial photo of The Crown but it's too distant to see clearly.

Thanks

I think the Hodson was on the corner of Draper Street and Carlisle Road. There was a snug there, a tiny place with only enough room for 3-4 chairs, that was frequented by one or two elderly ladies. It was also where you went for a drink to take out and you would often see someone going for a "jug".

Hi stpetre,

Thanks for that. I realise that Sharp street was just below Botham Street.

Was the crown just out of shot on the left of the first pic below? Looks like a shop on the right. The only trace of Sharp Street now in existence, as far as I am aware, is the small round ironwork in the middle of the street near the bottom of pic. It's now surrounded by concrete in a business yard. There's a similar one on Adsetts Street where I lived. Possibly a fire hydrant cover??.....

Here's another pic. of Sharp Street...
