The shop next to the chip shop was indeed as you say a ladies hairdressers on Upwell Lane.

When ukdobby mentioned the shop opposite the Reform Chapel i was not sure if

he meant Upwell Lane or Upwell Street .

As you say the Wensley Street newsagents was diagonally across.

Maybe Dave ( ukdobby ) can confirm which side of the Reform Chapel it was .

There was another shop across on Upwell Street i will be mentioning later in

replying to a picture posted earlier by Peter.

Would you or anyone know if they had the shop between 1960 and 1972 ?

Hi all, the chip shop opposite the Reform Chapel was on the corner of Upwell Lane & Upwell Hill it was owned by Mrs Smith 1940's/50's I can't remember the name of the people who took it over from them, it was after them that it changed to a Chinese chip shop, I think it was called (The San Pan).The hairdresser's was owned by a Mrs Rawlings who had a daughter called Elaine,( a number of years before that it was a plumbers shop owned by a Mr Lucas). The newsagents on the corner of Wensley st was owned by Mrs Robinson Graham Lee was her grandson. Jean J

Re Dr Wille.. I seem to remember he had about 6 children of his own & another 6 adopted ones?

 

And he also slapped my backside for shoving silver paper up my nose.Now why would i want to do that.

Beumont Rd manor park.

 

This picture is taken from Beumont Rd Manor Park, its looking over

to Grimesthorpe flats on grimesthorpe rd.

Drove along Owler Lane the other day to find the public convenience opposite the bottom of Popple Street has eventually been demolished. A new building is on the site but not sure what it is.

Had many a tiddle in there on my way to and from school.

Hi all, I feel sure that the shop by the side of Bagley Dyke and what was Owlet Lane (opposite The Reform Chapel) was owned by a distant relative of mine a chap called Charlie( Wag) Smith he had it as a grocery shop, and then I believe it became Pearsons used car spares.

I am told that the old toilets is an extension to the garage to make it a bigger shop.

Was on Upwell st my best pal who I never met,was a kid called Keith Pearson,not seen him for 40 years,he was a Blade and took him and another Blade to watch us lose at Huddersfield in the early 70s but couldn't convert them.

We're both well mate,scorchio out here at the moment.

You would'nt know by any chance if his mom was called Pat , would you ?

Further to my post 1626, here, for convenience, ( excuse the pun), is your pic of the toilet block as I have a little story about it....

In 1964 I had my first car a 1958 Ford Popular 103e, here it is....

My point is that my old workmate at Firth Browns, who died 3 years ago, wanted a similar car and we spotted a 1952 Ford Anglia E494a for sale on the garage forecourt parked just to the left of the toilet block. I think the sign said £60. Anyway he bought it in 1964.

Many years later, in 2001, I bought a car of the same model for old times sake and kept it for six years. Here it is....

Here are a few pics of my early years at 5 Adsetts Street....

 

Me with my old wooden scooter on Adsetts Street in c1948. I was on the street in front of next doors' window, Mr and Mrs Bell, number 7....

The above pics were overlooking the rear of the houses on Grimesthorpe Road on the right between Harrisons fruit and veg shop and the end walls of the steelworks. Note the man with the cap hogging the shots again ....

I never saw that many toys Peter at our "posh" end of Grimesthorpe,the part

that is still standing.
