Southey owl   10 #1597 Posted May 6, 2017 Hi Peter and all . There has been talk of Mr Collins's shop previously . Where exactly might it have been and what sort of business would he have been dealing ?  Also there's been talk of dirty rainmacs in the back. Had to have a chuckle about that one . I can assure everyone my very own rainmac was absolutely clean.
 Share this content via...
brian1941 Â Â 11 #1598 Posted May 10, 2017 (edited) Hi Peter R, Yes i'am back and here's some pics of intrest, had a walk up colliery rd and turned left to see what this Wheel was on Holyewell rd. It's about Brightside colliery in 1855-1871, the site of two colliery shafts 1868-1886. ( It says site of two shafts so there must be another somewhere) Men lost their lives - 5 men killed going down the shaft when the rope broke. They fell to the bottom a depth of 200yards. Age 18 to 60 years old. Â 2, Â 3, Â 4, Public Footpath. Â Peter, Although i have seen info on here about the colliery, i wondered if their is anything on sheffield pictures, somethink that pin points to where the colliery was. Yours Brian. This picture was taken in 1926 so I don't know if any of the buildings were part of the original pit yard. The perimeter wall on the extreme left runs parallel with Holywell Road (not yet built) and turns the corner onto Colliery Road. The two pit shafts were almost on this corner. If you look closely, you can just make out two circular depressions which could be the filled in shafts. I think Geotom has an airshaft from the pit somewhere near his house. giddygoat   10 #1606 Posted May 13, 2017 hiya all, first time poster but as a lad lived on Hawkshead road, jusl off Holywell Road until 1957 where I was friends with John Dyson, Rob Prescott and Stephen Richards and others, anyone remember these names? attended Owler lane school and was subjected to what we called "Monkey Run" for all new boys. used to be a grocery shop on the corner of Upwell Street and Carlisle street owned by Mrs. lemm and she had two sons Brian and Trevor anyone remember this?  John Dyson is my uncle. I will mention your post to him!  ---------- Post added 13-05-2017 at 14:29 ----------  Hi Peter Mrs Beeley's would be after your time , late 1940's / early 1950's. It would be 1960 /early 1970's the time 1 lived at Grange Farm (Beacon Road .) Mrs Beeley's fish and chip shop was exactly on the junction of . . . . . . Wincobank Lane / Upwell Street . The building on your second picture , bottom half painted white is the exact shop, the entrance / doorway was on the very corner of Wincobank Lane. Between the white building and the Bedford van . . . . . . behind the unpainted wall you mentioned was stepping. The steps did not lead you to Mrs Beeley's shop , but to a doctors surgery. The doctor at that particular time was Dr Felix Wille , a real gentleman with a fairly large family of boys and girls, a rather jolly fellow, he and his wife became good friends with myself and my late wife. You could'nt wish to meet a nicer chap. He was also the Police doctor for Attercliffe station.  Kind regards Peter.  Mick.  Re Dr Wille.. I seem to remember he had about 6 children of his own & another 6 adopted ones? brian1941 Â Â 11 #1607 Posted May 13, 2017 Hi Southey Owl, Like your Pictures it looks very tidy round the wheel, when did all the planting and the laying of the stone happen. I was at the wheel on this Wednesday 10th May 2017, although the grass verge had been cut it just needs the edges trimming round the stone but as said it look very nice passing by and can read the wording on the plaque.
