Grimesthorpe Part 3

Recommended Posts

I forgot to mention in my last post that I remember an Eric Chamberlain from my school days. He would have been born around 1932 but I don't remember him living on Chambers Lane.

Rohsgran

No, no relation, I seem to think Eric Chamberlain might have come from around Botham St, the middle section. fleetwood

Hi Mick and stpetre.

I'm the oldest of three brothers and a sister who is youngest. Both my brothers went to Firth Park Grammar (red caps) whilst I only managed Owler Lane/ Earl Marshall :hihi:

Quite coincidentally and at different Authorities, my eldest son, who is now 50, is a Senior Officer at Rotherham Council and my second wife was the same grade at Sheffield and later at Bassetlaw.

Now stpetre has given us the name of the church I have located it on the right at the Bernard Street junction at the crossroads with Cricket Inn Road. Over the crossroads Bernard Street then becomes Bernard Road heading downhill towards Effingham Street.

Here's a closer view of the church taken in Sept 1991 when one of the blocks at Hyde Park flats was being demolished....

and in the opposite direction in 1981...

Hi stpetre and Peter

Thanks stpetre for identification of the church St John.

And Peter you must be proud of your fellow kin , quite impressive.i must say.

Not being too familiar of Bernard St /Bernard Rd crossroads .

But can anyone identify the building to the right behind the crane ? (Ref .t04823 )

To me it looks to be more than just a dwelling . . .

. . . could it be an Inn or a Public House ?

Mick.

I think it's the back of the Durham Ox in the centre of THIS photo.

Thanks Jim

Its a great pic you provided.

You appear to be familiar with the Durham Ox .

With the decline and closures of Public Houses of today . . .

. . . would you know if the Durham Ox is still operational ?

I am back in Sheffield for 3 days week after next & looking forward to meeting up with family & friends from Reform Chapel & 53rd BB. Reform chapel & Grimesthorpe school played such a big part in my life. Also grandma, grandad & Uncle Ken who lived at 43 Rothay Rd. Great memories!
Hi johnpm - Many many years ago (I am talking a long time ago) on a trip back to Sheffield to see family and friends, I was in the town centre who should I see but a relative of yours Ken Morris (I think you had mentioned him before at some point). I recognised him right away, we didn't pass close and he wouldn't have known me anyway, he hadn't changed a bit except for one thing his hair was now white, something we all had to look forward too down the road. fleetwood

Yes Jim, that photo showing the front of the 'Durham Ox'. It's a pub I never went in, perhaps for some foolish notion on my part that something would come careering down Cricket Inn Road (to the right of it), miss the bend and crash into it. I had the same feeling with the house (tho' not a pub)- the Toll Bar- at the bottom of Shirecliffe Lane at Pitsmoor Road. Also in the photo at near top left, a good shot of Firth-Brown's.

Getting a bit off topic now, I wouldn't want to upset any of the Grimethorpians but you must mean THIS.

Hi Fleetwood, Thanks for that memory. Uncle Ken played such a large part in my early life because dad worked on Saturday's so I spent every Saturday with Uncle Ken who introduced me to hiking, classical music & many other things. I have so many great memories of those days. John

Hi Mick,

Would this be Mrs Beeley's or was it after my time? I remember going for chips in the late 40s/early 50s after going to the Vic Picture Palace....

Looking down Wincobank Lane towards Upwell Street on 29 Sept 1959 turn left at the bottom onto Upwell Street.....

You would then appear on Upwell Street, having time travelled to 3 May 1967,:hihi:, at the corner where the building painted white on the bottom half is. There is an unpainted wall stepping upwards to the right between that white building and the bedford van in the distance. I think where I went for my chips was up the steps to the building with the bay window, above the van. The Vic was on the garage forecourt with the painted wall where the Mobil sign is and the two people.....

Hi Peter

Very smart indeed in their fine elegant clothes of the 1930's .

Would they be family or friends of yours or indeed cinema employees ?

Hi Peter again .

The second pic taken on the Victory Palace steps .

Now I really like this one .

The Victory Palace cleaners all nice slim young ladies of 1931 .

But what tickled me was the girl on the right , Lizze Truelove .

With a name like Lizze Truelove associated with a cinema one would never think of

a cleaner . . . but a leading actress in a feature film.

Many thanks for your pics again Peter , much appreciated.
