Grimesthorpe Part 3

Recommended Posts

Hi cat631,

Good pics of where the bell tower used to live. Not seen these before.

It may well have been hiding in the bushes when I drove past last time I was in the area. Watch this space :hihi:

Owler Brook primary school is located to west of Wensley Street and between the east end of Lloyd Street and above Dunmow Road.

Hello stpetre. I think you misunderstood my comment. I know where Owler Brook School is ( post 1141) but was questioning its name. I don't know of a brook or stream by that name in Grimesthorpe. Perhaps someone else could enlighten us?

I had a reply to my email regarding Owler Brook's bell tower. The school manager said it was from Owler Lane but as we've seen from the photos, it's not the one from our school. There was another tower on Owler Lane Infants School but that looks to be different to theirs too.

Regards, Ralph.

Thank you Ralph and perhaps I did misunderstand your correct post, not that it might matter or related, I know where the 'Who Can Tell' was.

Hi cat631,

Have you seen these pics on Picture Sheffield. Apparently they believe that Owler Lane Infants School was once named Owler Brook School. When zooming in further on my computer I feel 99% certain that the Owler Brook School bell tower can be seen on the roof on the pics.

Also here again for convenience is the said bell tower on the ground.

Finally, what were the other two towers on top of the roof on the single storey building for ?? Maybe ventilation. Surely not more bells :hihi:

I hadn't been aware of a school on Wensley Street so was prompted to find this on the search engine the other day....

http://www.owlerbrookschool.org/

Maybe it was built around the time of the Firvale school....

Hi All, I never new there was a school on Wensley St and I lived on Upwell Hill and my mum was born there also, and she never mentioned a school there. At the bottom of Wensley St was Robinson paper shop. a few houses, Middletons haulage, then the start of the Prefabs, which ran up to the Grey hills, if you carried on over the Grey hills you came to Shiregreen and the Flower estate. If you walked up the left hand side of the prefabs about 3quarters of the way up was a snicket which brought you into Hind st at the back of the library.
