Grimesthorpe Part 3

Thanks for them great pictures Peter, i did'nt mention in my last thread

the year i took my little girl to the School play ground.

She was born 1968 so it would be about 1970 plus because in 1972 we

left Grimesthorpe due to the housing compulsory purchase order.

-------------

Yes i noticed the Firth Browns over the top as i was first drawn to the

smoke, cough cough them days.

-------------------------------------

Hi Brian, stpetre, bantycock and All,

I used to play up Wincobank Hill sometimes as it was nearby, next to the bottom end of Grimesthorpe where I lived, and seemed like a different planet up there with fresh air and distant views!

Yes, Firth Brown Siemens Electric Melting furnace shop is the massive building, middle background of pic, where I earned my overhead electric crane drivers licence in 1965.

Coincidentally, my daughter was also born in 1968 Brian, but in Bramley and went to school in Bramley and Wickersley (other side of Rotherham) so they probably never met. :)

Peter.

Hi Stpetre, Yes i remember the allotment, me and my mates use to

visit them and if the owner was on their gardens we use to ask if they

have any old wood or trees for the Nov bonfire. :hihi: Brian.

Allotment, I thought there was more the one.

I think the 1947 photo was of that year it opened, the kids are running across Barbur Road, the photo taken from either Kayser-Ellison's canteen on Sutherland Road or the rear of Earsham Street houses, the houses just beyond the playground are on Forncett Street and above that is part of the 'Majestic' Firth-Brown's. I use that adjective because they provided a lot of employment (my dad for one) and were synonymous with great things from industrial Sheffield. Oh, and the kids in the playground too !

Also I think the other photo, looking at the kid's clothes, is from at least the late '50s, so a lot of them, including myself (tho' I don't think in the playground that day) are still around. Great pics ! And as this is a Grimesthorpe thread and Sutherland Road is in Ellesmere/Pitsmoor . I respect those at the , well. Carlisle Road /Upwell Street area anyway.

Hi stpetre,

As someone who lived at Grimesthorpe I just want to pick up on your last sentence and say that I'm in tune with your comments about this being the Grimesthorpe thread and, as such, I try not to go off at a tangent into other areas too much. Trouble is, so much would be missed, I feel, if we didn't stray over 'borders' with comments occasionally and I feel that you would agree.

I believe you lived at the Ellesmore/Pitsmoor end of Carlisle Street East whilst I lived on Adsetts Street at the Grimesthorpe/Upwell Street end of Carlisle Street East. It seems to me that if we are all able to share fond memories of the same streets in this part of Sheffield and some of us worked at the same factory in the area aswell, then, we were all neighbours eh ?? :)

Hi Brian,

I worked in three separate offices between 1959 and 1966. It was as chargehand in Central Warehouse 1965/66 where I occasionaly drove the overhead crane. I still have my licence.

See more about that and an aerial photo including Siemens shop and Central Warehouse on the thread 'Anyone worked at Firth Browns?' , post 278 page 14, and post 333 page 17.

Yes, devastating for the Tata workers and families. Redcar is only 50 minutes drive from where I live.

Hi Bantycock, After coming out off Sunbeam picture house me and mates

walked down Skinnerthorpe Rd to the bottom then turn right through

an opening - ( might have been a gate there at one time ) anyway that

led to the firvale gardens, then it took us onto Earl Marshall Rd.

As a child in the early 1950s I lived on Adsetts Street and used to visit the Victory Picture Palace on Upwell Street. My route was down Grimesthorpe Road and Little Lane. Around 40 years later I decided to retrace that route.

When crouching down to child height I was taken straight back to the early times, particularly beside the grey pebbledashed wall on Little Lane past the side of the Bowling Green Hotel.

Here are some photos I took on Little Lane during that walk down memory lane in 1991.

Hope they bring memories back for some of you :)

In order to follow the route in the correct sequence, please click on each of the following lines separately, rather than clicking the arrows that may, sometimes, shown on the pic.
