You're definitely best off looking for bare root hedging roses, with the number you want. Rosa rugosa is probably the best choice for rose hedges, as it's particularly tough, very spiky, flowers for months (most wild roses flower for a short period) and has attractive foliage and rosehips. I personally like the white version, Rosa rugosa alba, best - or a mix of colours looks nice.

Some nurseries will stock bare-root roses in the hedging department, most commonly Rosa rugosa. You'll be better off going online, though. A quick search brings up Scotplants direct selling bare root rugosa at just 60p per plant or so. I'd recommend buying a few more than you need and potting up the extras to replace any plants which die.

Wild roses are easy to strike from cuttings but you need to start in the autumn. I've not heard of anyone having success with spring or summer cuttings of roses.

Best of luck with your hedge!

That sounds like a good deal. I do always prefer to see what I'm getting if possible.

I have been buying bare root hedging and trees from Hopes Grove for fifteen years. I have several hundred meters of hedging. I have various native roses in my hedge. Most are around 65p each for good sized bare root plants. Some are cheaper, some more expensive.

You have until about the end of March to plant bare root otherwise wait until autumn/winter.
