Aquarium Cleaning

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Is there any Aquarium know it all's out there??

I have 60lt bio orb and the water is green! I've changed the water 50/50 then 1/4 every 4 days, it goes on lovely for a couple of days then back to green!

I think it may be in the wrong place (its in the kitchen about 8ft from patio doors).... could this be the reason?

I don't even know if I'm looking after the fish properly! I need real help please...

Thanks in advance x

I have a similar problem with my biorb and that's about the same distance from our patio doors so could be. The guy at the aquatic shop I bought some fish from said direct sunlight does affect them.

I bought a couple of zebra snails off ebay and they've been happily eating their way round the edges and it has improved since they were added.

Direct sunlight will make algae grow making it look green, apart from the eyesore shouldn't really effect it too much, water changes will work temporarily, moving the tank or getting some algae clear from your local pet shop should fix it long term

Ive got one with same issue, will try the snails, theres nothing I can do about the location and even shading doesnt help. Tried the algae biorb filter that was pants

Snails breed like crazy, and eventually they become a problem and over-run the tank...Read the link I posted earlier....It's the only solution...The tank and water 'has' to be 'cycled'....I know it's a pain...and takes forever....Basically there has to be 'bacteria' in the filter system to get it right......it's no good having a brand spanking new clean filter....it doesn't work like that...the filter has to have bacteria in it

...but according to the various websites I visited yesteday t ocheck on these 'zebra snails', they DON'T breed like crazy - they only breed in brackish water... (so the blurb says).

I've recently started keeping tropical fish. Well, actually I've not got as far as actually getting the fish yet, I'm still doing the fishless cycle. I've been reading lots of different websites and there's so much conflicting advice! It can be very confusing to know what to do for the best.

Hi Angel,

I would strongly recommend putting at least a few fish in as in order for your tank to cycle there has to me nitrates and nitrites into the water to start with, these are things that come from ammonia that the fish produce
