apelike   10 #532 Posted July 24, 2016 There is a growing alternative sport scene in this country. The site could have been expanded for more slopes; hotels and all sorts of other businesses could have sprung up around it to feed of it and support it and regenerate the entire area, but alas it wasn't to be. The only growth industry in Sheffield is the university it seems.  The biggest problem with the ski village was that it was not easy to access with narrow roads and a low bridge making it unsuitable for buses. It was also expensive for all but the dedicated skier and it was also losing money. If it had not burnt down then it would have had to close anyway. geared   267 #534 Posted July 26, 2016 Is there any reason it's not been redeveloped yet?  I remember reading in the paper a while back the ski village owner was pointing fingers at the council?? Not sure I believe him though?
 Share this content via...
apelike   10 #535 Posted July 26, 2016 It was not losing money at all. Was a nice little Esther for Kevin.  Was it? I probably exaggerated a bit in saying it was losing money but it certainly was not making much given the money spent on it. The previous owners also failed to encourage visitors or make much in the way of profit hence its demise. Isn't Kevin also a housing developer who would see the land as housing potential with a greater profit margin?  In any-case here are a few key moments printed in the Star:  1988 Sheffield Ski Village opens 1999 Snow Mountain project first mooted 2000 Xscape opens in Milton Keynes * 2003 Xscape Castleford opens * 2003 Site put up for sale for £1 2004 Firm into administration 2007 Bought by Kevin Pullan 2012 Fire at ski village 2012 Further fires on site 2013 Further arson attacks 2013 Steve Peat opens his downhill mountain biking trails 2014 Kevin Pullan’s plan to put housing on the site is rejected 2015 Council unveils new masterplan for the Parkwood Springs site  * Xscape used real snow, was popular and took away a lot of business. taxman   12 #540 Posted August 16, 2016 I'm surprised that theres anything flammable left that hadn't already been burnt.  People seem to be using it as an unofficial tyre dump, hence the dense black smoke today.
 Share this content via...
