ProFIBS Â Â 10 #1 Posted August 1, 2014 Do you have IBS or know someone who does? Â Researchers at The University of Sheffield are currently seeking volunteers with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), preferably working in the vicinity of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, for a study looking at the benefits of probiotics and fish oils in IBS. Â There is a media and advertising blitz on the use of these health supplements, but as yet little or no data to identify whether the claimed benefits persist with long-term use nor what their mechanism might be. Â We are looking to recruit 74 subjects. Subjects will be asked to consume a daily probiotic and fish oil supplement, or placebo, which we will provide, for a 12 week period. Â Volunteers will be asked to answer a few short questionnaires about their IBS symptoms, diet, anxiety and memory. Some volunteers will be asked to provide a stool (poo) sample at the start and end of the trial. Â The data from this trial will help us to treat and advise people with IBS better. Â The imposition on subjects' time will be reflected in an honorarium of 40 pounds. Participants who provide stool samples will be compensated 75 pounds for completing this study. Â *Subjects' anonymity will be assured* Â This study has been approved by the University of Sheffield Research Ethics Committee (Study ReferenceSMBRER303).
