Yah-Boo threads

Do extreme opinions deter you from taking part in threads which interest you, but where the heat of the discussion overwhelms the heart of the discussion?

I'd say it's a problem with politics generally and a cause of apathy and disengagement.

Yah boo politics: "adversarial politics in which politicians constantly deride their opponents and dismiss everything suggested by them." Collins Dictionary

There are a lot of "Yah-boo-ists" on SF, not just in political discussions either.

A recent real-world were the so-called "Freedom Riders" or FREELOADERS as they should be known.

Nope. The recent ones. The freeloading OAPs who thought they should get free train travel to Leeds, paid for out of public coffers, got told no then proceeded to break the law, claiming it was "in peaceful protest" until a couple of them were arrested for the offence as well as resisting arrest & assaulting a police officer

Thanks for clarifying but Im still not clear how this relates to "yah boo" behaviour. Im thinking of those who enter into a serious discussion not to get at any truth but to undermine the other person and their argument by indirect, underhand or disrespectful means.

Disobedient protest may be somewhere on this spectrum but not really what i had in mind.

I think I know what you mean, DrNorm. It does make the forum less enjoyable. Not sure what could be done without stifling good discussion though.

The flipside is that there are forumers who I might not be inclined to agree with on the face of things, but whom make good points using humour and (gasp!) facts and make me rethink. Alcoblog is one. PlainTalker is another. I'm sure there are many more.

BTW, I love your precision in writing, and the gorgeous phrase "where the heat of the discussion overwhelms the heart of the discussion". Well done.
