The Star ran an article today " decade of help and support for asylum seekers " This morning there were 13 comments all hostile though not offensive , this afternoon all the comments removed and the comments facility removed

so much for a free press reflecting the views of the community

it's the star's website they can turn on and off comments as they wish

you only have to look at some of the things which get posted on here and the amount of effort it takes for the mod team to manage them to understand why, in retrospect, the star decided that it probably wasn't worth the hassle allowing comments.

The Daily Mail does that every day on numerous articles. For legal reasons supposedly.

You dont know what else they had to delete between the time you checked. They dont have unlimited resources and where people persistently post offensively then threads can be locked down as being more trouble than they are worth.

I always find the star top class and they are great sponsors of events

Yeah, but you have to say that don't you, or they wont sponsor that god damn show you're always bleating on about. :hihi:

Generally a lot of the folk that post comments on stories on the Star website do not exhibit a high level of intellect or understanding of the subject and I imagine such a story probably attracted comments that were considered offensive, racist, libellous or inaccurate!

It doesn't look very good either if you go on to read an article, and at the bottom is some half-wit effin and geffin about god knows what.

Half the time the posts are stupid/ignorant/racist anyway.

But whats the point of having a comments page if you are going to remove the comments at the slightest mention of anything remotely controversial . ? It stifles all debate . its pointless. The problem is too many people spend too much time just waiting to jump on anyone who dares to mention Foreigners and playing the race card. Its the same on all online boards .

Why , because they dare to mention Foreigners ?

God forbid anyone wanting to discuss or comment on immigration or extremism .

Having read some of the comments on the site I can see why The Star have to take a heavy handed stance towards moderation. They are bound by a code of conduct for one aren't they but a good few undesirables seem to use to comment section of the site to troll and bait as well and I suppose even the most sly of backhand comments could escalate into something much more.

If people respected spaces such as this then it wouldn't be needed would it but a good few people don't. Plus what you may not find offensive could potentially be construed as offensive by others.
