" A Muslim cashier at a Tesco store refused to serve a customer buying ham and wine because he said it was Ramadan.

The till operator told Julie Cottle he would not touch the items as they are considered forbidden by Islam and said she should use the self- service tills instead."

Surely if he does not want to handle Ham or alcohol during Ramadan then he needs to find a different job ?

Opinions ?

She ought to of used the self service anyway so she didn't have to speak to the numpty! supermarket cashiers wind me up and I try to avoid at all costs..

As for the chap, as much as his religious choice is respected he is after all working in a supermarket which is all about servicing the customer and his own personal views are not needed in such a job...

Definitely needs to find another job...

Surely if he refuses to handle certain items Tesco should put him in the veg and fruit section stacking shelves.

Then everyone is happy right??

However I don't understand how he is not allowed to even touch these items, is that actually part of Ramadam or is that just some stupid rule he's set himself??

Technically he's not allowed to touch them at any point of the year if they're against his religion??

But if he does get put on the Fruit and Veg isle, he could very well complain about "equality". End of the day, he's in the wrong job, but it could be the only job he can get so has to make do.

I'd have been a bit annoyed but so what you just go to someone else or the self service, it's not a big deal.

Obviously it was to this woman, it's a joke that these things happen and a bigger joke that big companys like Tesco allow it.

Would you not question why he's on the till if he can't touch certain foods/drinks ? Is not touching Ham or Wine "part of" Ramadan ?

The last time this happened the shop just said that in future they'd put that member of staff on a job that didn't involve serving people with pork or booze. So it's these shops not learning their lesson, not the person servings fault.

Obviously this woman doesn't want to touch this stuff for religious reasons during Ramadan, is that part of Ramadan? I don't know, I'm not a Muslim. If it's such a big deal for her that she doesn't want to serve someone with something then it's not as big a deal for me to just go to a self service till.

As for the shopper, she's making a mountain out of a molehill probably trying to squeeze some vouchers out of Tesco and sell her 'story' to the news.

How does equality mean that you can't be made to work on the fruit and veg isle?
