Microsoft Windows 9

Well, an early beta is expected to be released before the end of the year and it looks like various improvements have been leaked on the web including free versions, activation systems and a focus on the desktop, the latter being welcome news to many.

I think the desktop needs major attention, even on Windows 8 and parts of it still resemble XP or older and it looks like Microsoft is wanting to distance itself from the bifurcated experience that was Windows 8 even though Windows 8 has been the bold stepping stone into a new era that was required and many people have said that users should have had more choices regarding interfaces and to be eased into it far better than just being forced to use a system that was alien to most of the older generation of desktop users.

I hope that they update a lot of the desktop elements and should allow certain elements to be optional like Windows Media Player which has itself been stuck in time and functions the way it did over 10 years ago, if they managed to overhaul Windows Media Player with Zune or similar, pack it with loads of features like media store / streaming apps and able to play multiple files on VLC scale and to be able to sync properly with all Apple devices just like iTunes as well improving its ripping abilities like enabling more audio format options like AAC / FLAC + advanced ripping options like secure rip / VBR options instead of the dead WMA files and dated MP3 encoder then Windows 9 could have a substantial competitor to iTunes and the media streaming options out there.

According to the 'Windows Rule of Thumb' Windows 9 should be pretty good.

However Windows 7 is still perfectly fine, I don't feel like I'm left 'wanting' for anything, I can't think of any aspect from Windows 8 I prefer over 7 to be honest.

The only thing I wouldn't mind at work is the per monitor DPI setting that is in Windows 8. 1920x1080 on a laptop is a bit small but if I change it on that, my other two monitors get the same setting in Win 7.

But otherwise, as you said, not really needing an upgrade.

My hopes for Windows 9:

* Return to the desktop operation i.e. boot to desktop and make programme associations same as Windows 7.

* Return the control options back to how they are in W7 e.g. no metro interface for things like Windows Update, bluetooth etc etc.

* Get rid of the start screen.

* Return to the traditional start menu.

* Continue with App Store but make it less prominent. Add the option in programmes (which would be similar to Apple) so that it can be accessed easily should users want to go there.

It needs to be an integrated system, not a bifurcated one.

I think you're going to be extremely disappointed.

I don't think so dosxuk. I now use a Mac and it's unlikely that I will need another Windows computer anytime soon. The mess that is Windows 8 is one of the reasons why I changed after thinking about it for some years. It's been a steep learning curve but happily it's also been a good choice.

So they're not your hopes then? They're just random ideas you've jotted down for no real reason because they're not going to affect you.

I believe that's known as cutting your nose off to spite your face :hihi:

8.1 has a boot to desktop option already, file associations take seconds to change them to desktop ones.

Already there, its called control panel.

Get rid of the start screen.

Never have to spend any time in the start screen if you don't want too.

Return to the traditional start menu.

As I have said numerous times, you do not need it. If it does bother you that much there are third party ones as you already know.

Continue with App Store but make it less prominent. Add the option in programmes (which would be similar to Apple) so that it can be accessed easily should users want to go there.

You never have to visit the app store if you don't wish to, any apps you do or might use can be added to your desktop task bar on 8.1.

Basically your win 9 wish list is already there on win 8.1 ;)
