Just what do they mean by your five a day?

I'm rather puzzled by this 5 a day business when it comes to diet. I might have a better chance of hitting 5 a day if I actually knew what it means.

This is my diet over the past few days. I would be interested in opinions of how many portions of fruit/veg I've eaten each day.

Tuesday

breakfast. Bowl of Shreddies. Glass of fresh squeezed orage juice.

lunch. Ploughmans. A bit of cheese a small slice of pork pie. pickles, 2 spring onions, a small amount of lettuce.

Evening. Chilli Fajitas. Mince with tinned tomato, onion, a chilli, a red pepper and a few red kidney beans in a corn tortilla, baked with cheese and served with coleslaw. (The pepper went into the mix and served the 3 of us. 1 fajita each)

Raspberries with meringue and cream

Wednesday

Breakfast. Kipper. Glass of fresh squeezed orange juice.

lunch. Smoked salmon in a green salad.

evening. Burger at Swanky Franks. Served in a bun with a bit of lettuce, tomato, sweet corn pickle, chips, onion rings and a tiny pot of coleslaw.

Thursday. Oatcake with banana and peanut butter. Fresh squeezed orange juice.

mid morning 2 ginger biscuits with coffee at hairdressers

Lunch. cold chicken wrap containing a modest amount of salad and mayo.

Evening. Steak pie, small jacket potato, green beans from my own garden.

Strawberries and cream. Grape juice in the form of Chianti.

Today

A bowl of Shreddies. Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice.

lunch. Cheese salad. (lettuce, tomato, grated carrot)

Evening. Vegetable curry with rice and nan bread.

Strawberries and cream

I have absolutely no idea how close I've got to my 5 a day. I would appreciate comments or even other folkd diet over the past few days with their opinion on how they have got on.

Yes. Been there. Got the T shirt. It doesn't mean a thing to me.

If you have a bowl of tomato soup how many of your 5 a day is that?

It would depend on how many tomatoes there where in the recipe.

I think the best you're going to get is the portion sizes information and work it out from there. This portion sizes guide is the most detailed thing they have.

It will be a lot easier if you are cooking things so, you know what's going into the food, rather than processed stuff that is likely to be watered down/contain bulking agents/etc.

I also find it hard to gauge how much of my five a day comes from my diet of lobster and truffle oil, seagull eggs, kelp and urchins plus freshly squeezed goji berries. Oh woe is me.

Some nutritionists don't like fruit juices being included as part of the '5 a day' because they contain a load of sugar.

One glass of orange juice contains about five pulverised oranges which is bad for the old calorie count.

Also they say you have to have different types, if you have an orange and a grapefruit...you might have a hard time convincing a nutritionist that you've had two portions cause their makeup is so similar you're getting about the same nutrients in both.
