[oft-repeated, long-held view]

Laws need to enacted which make parents criminally responsible for their offspring whilst underage

[/oft-repeated, long-held view]

This will likely take a long while to percolate through society until its full benefit is reached (I'm talking half- to a full generation, probably), but is IMHO one of the simplest and cheapest practical solutions to force parents into assuming their role, regardless of their socio-professional standing and circumstances, and -as the expected outcome- bring up their offspring to be as respectful of laws and societal norms as is possible.

When you're at risk of doing hard time if your little johnny steals and joyrides a car, it kinda focuses the mind a bit more than just a telling-off (if any) from the Police and/or Social worker.

if this country stops giving millions and millions of pounds to help out other places maybe we could build some more prisons

anybody with a brain cell can clearly see that we need more prisons in britian

then we can forget about the prisions are full so instead of getting 2 year il slap your wrist and give you a 60 pounds fine..

how on earth can the police force have funds cut and the army aswell :loopy:

these 2 forces should never have there funds cut

Maple isnt the only 136 suite in South Yorkshire. And they dont tend to take them to the cells when intoxicated

Ive never seen the police handing over a patient to triage at the NGH. Sometimes the police do ambulance jobs, sometimes (more times?) the ambulance do what should be police jobs.

Yes it is and Yes they do!

No you won't because they have to sit with them for anything between 4 to 6 hours til a psychiatric nurse speaks to them

Cutting your quote down to address this bit only as most I agreed with. The PCSOs do fantastic work by not being able to arrest as the communities trust them more. Yes it must be frustrating having some scroaty blatantly breaking the law in front of them and them having no more power than you or I, but that isn't their job. They are there to work with their communities to try to improve things without having to arrest people. Education, crime prevention, working with people who are too scared to talk to the police for example, assisting women (or men) in abusive relationships. Their job is more of a social worker than a police officer and the difference is important.

If we are too short on PCs, then recruit more PCs but do not change the work the PCSOs do and it's totally undervalued in my opinion because they can't show any arrest statistics so it's far harder for the public to understand what value they bring.

It takes a long time to teach anyone how to identify and use powers of arrest, police budgets are confined to doing practical things on the cheap, they can sit around conference tables talking in gobbledegookspeak until the cows come home, but that gives the impression on television that they are dealing with 'things'. Why not turn out the Deputy Chief Constable and the other senior officers who sit around talking all day ?, at least the public will see more uniforms on the street, albeit with a bit of scrambled egg on their hats.

Definitely. Back to the floor type events are often incredibly useful for both the managers and the workers. Seeing things through someone else's eyes can change your entire perspective.

Yes - but its all very well having lots of extra and cheaper bods around, but when the regular cops are being cut left right and centre (and they are no matter what the top bosses and PCC tell us) who is going to make the arrests once the PCSO's have got the information from the public?

IMO - they would be better suited being council ambassadors - paid less money than they are on and more money spent on real Police officers.

PCSO's are nothing more than a sticking plaster to make it look like there are more cops out there than there really are. Some of us haven't been fooled however well its tried to be made to look good

What the Police need is officers that can tell the truth and not just make stuff up in order to get convictions.

I believe for all its failings they should have people in the witness stand wired up to polygraph machines, then at least people on both sides will at least think twice about being truthful.

You expect criminals to be liars but you would be surprised how many of these law enforcers wouldn't know the truth if it bit them on the leg.

What do you base that on Clint?

I did say, if you need more cops, get more cops...both do different jobs and we should have the correct numbers of both. This should not be an either or situation.
