How does Hillsborough Leisure centre survive?

Recommended Posts

If you fancy a gym with the finest views in the region along with over 30 'machines' including brand new treadmills try Stocksbridge Leisure Centre. It's now community run - unlike Hillsborough et al that are run by the Council so you have a say in how it’s operated.

£17.50pm unlimited usage and free induction from employed professional trainers. Give us a call on 288 3792 or check out our (being updated) website:

I thought it was said on this thread that Hillsborough was run but SIV and not the Council?

And what about the fuel costs getting to and from Stocksbridge every time, it soon mounts up.

Net worth of -9.2 million at the moment. Ouch. Are they technically "operating insolvent" then?

Shareholders list is interesting though;

Shareholders (Top 20 names shown) Number of Shares (at Value) Share Type Ownership (%)

SHEFFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY 1 (at £1) ORDINARY 1.00

SHEFFIELD CITY TRUST 99 (at £1) ORDINARY 99.00

Looks like it's still entirely owned by the city.

---------- Post added 30-06-2014 at 15:10 ----------

Now that's quite interesting

What happened in 10 - 11, where did the big jump in value come from, council investment?

Well this is a bit fat lie for starters, the only ones you have to pay for is when they bring outside people in, and that amounts to yoga and pilates usually. I do a spin class every Tuesday and it doesnt cost me an extra penny, as an example.

And in case you dont believe me:

I didnt bold the word "Fitspace" in your original claim.

And again it looks to me that very few on there actually incur a cost anyway, only 4 out of 20 and one of those is belly dancing. Think you are clutching at straws a bit here, matey.

Well that is your choice. There are two classes ay my gym that attract a cost, either yoga or pilates, and I do neither, so I incur a zero cost on top. Will be the same for the vast majority of the gym users.

Horses for courses.

I need to get back in shape so looked at rejoining a gym. We now have loads in Sheffield. Are HLC failing to respond to this change in the market.

They are over £30pm on contract. For £15 I can join puregym, have access to gyms across the country and have no contract.

Why would anyone use a council run gym that is not competitive?

Hi Cuey,

You really ought to think about giving HLC a go, it's a really good gym with lovely fitness trainers, plenty of machines to have a go at and it's clean! And if you love swimming then the price of the monthly fee is really worth it.. I go to the gym 3 times a week and I go swimming 3 times a week so it's a bargain for me.

I would echo that, there's so much on with SIV, i'm not completely sure my children know who I am; i'm there so much!

I'm pretty sure they also offer a free day pass to potential members so they can try before they buy.

Another good thing about SIV is that they also offer children's memberships, they can go to the gym once over 12 yrs old, accompanied by an adult!, do some fitness classes, swimming's included, plus they used to do kids clubs at the weekend at Hillsborough so they could be entertained whilst you went to the gym, at £12 per month for a child I thought it was a bargain!

As Cyclone says, SIV is wholly owned by Sheffield City Trust (which is 99% owned by SCC and 1% by Sheffield Chamber). They also run Scarborough Spa (in which they spent £700k on refurbishments)

AMR67 is absolutely right about the cost of travelling to Hillsborough which is why the local community in Stocksbridge has taken over the running of the leisure centre after the City Council closed it citing lack of money.

The centre is now totally refurbished – with 3 squash courts, indoor bowls hall, sports hall and a fully equipped gym open from 7am – 9pm staffed by trained volunteers supported by qualified staff.

Gym members receive a ‘Your Gym ‘card that entitles them to 40% discount off all facilities as well as exclusive discounts from local traders. The community is now busy raising £100k to re-open the 2 pools within the next 12 months.
