If Suarez was English ..

Rather than defend him at all costs as the Uruguayans have done, would the English FA have sent him straight home without waiting for the FIFA verdict?

Related to that, is the Uruguayan attitude of anything goes in support of the team and the cause (eg rules are for officials to worry about rather than players), whilst morally wrong IMO, a reason why they will always be more successful than England with its fair play ethos despite having far fewer resources?

Man for man, I don't think many of us would swap too many of the Uruguay team for England's yet WC after WC they get further. Is this "die (or cheat, perhaps) for the team" approach the thing that makes the difference?

Very interesting

Very slightly off topic but I have thought for a while that the treatment of Suarez (note - I am not defending him at all) is very different to say John Terry.

There have been several points in the last few years where Suarez has been almost hounded out of the country by the press.

John Terry has actually been found guilty of racism by the FA and copped off with a team mates ex but is seen as the ultimate geezer and an english folk hero with the clenched fist go in 'ard mentality that has ...err... served us so well in recent years.

Even questions - quiet ones maybe - about why he wasn't going to this world cup.

(btw BBC pundits all belly laughing last night about footage of Chris Waddle diving when playing for Marseille)

John terry was found not guilty in a court of law.

He was also hounded by the media (that is sadly what they do).

Furthermore, England took the captaincy (whether rightly or wrongly) away from him. He then retired.

I have no doubt in my mind, Suarez will continue to captain bis country after his racism and other acts.

I do wonder if there's an agenda against him to b honest.

I remember the shocking tackle Roy Keane did on the Man City player and I don't think his treatment was anywhere near as bad as this.

Quite truly atrocious challenge, but that was around 2001?

The way news can travel and be easily available now is a lot easier and quicker. People can air their opinions a lot more.

For instance, we couldn't talk about that challenge on here...

Also such challenges now have become more punishable.

Didn't Keane get an 8 game ban?

As it happens I think there was too much righteous indignation about the Keane tackle.

Do you actually know the full story?

Keane's whole life was football, he worked his tripes out to become a professional player and was hugely dedicated.

He was badly injured whilst playing against Leeds United who Haland played for. He'd suffered a cruciate knee injury and was laid on the floor in excruciating pain believing his career was over.

As he laid there Alf Inge Haland came over and laughed at him and accused him of feigning injury.

Keane was out of football for almost a year and his full recovery was in doubt for a lot of that time.

Haland had previously placed on record his hatred of Man U and their players.

Personally my attitude is what goes around comes around.

Incidentally I'm no Roy Keane fan, I haven't forgiven him for walking out in Saipan. As for Man U, well let's say I wasn't too upset with their recent problems. :)

But I'm not a 'turn the other cheek' type, a bit of good old fashioned vengeance is not a problem as far as I'm concerned.

All you have to do to avoid that type of thing is treat people with respect, then it won't happen.

He was found guilty of racism by the FA - The national governing body of the sport. But Yes Suarez will be welcomed back like a prodigal son by Uruguay.

Media baying for stories and controversy? We probably agree that Terry was in the middle of this

+1 to this.

He was found guilty by the football authorities and banned, plus if you lip read the thing you can see the words he says, he is most abusive.

I am amazed that people still try to defend this obnoxious twit.
