They will have to pay 40% inheritance tax, currently on any assets worth more than £235k. The tax man requires the money within 3 months. If they don't have it, which they most probably won't, they will have to take out a loan to pay back the tax man. More unnecessary debt for the children! The next generation will be living on debt, debt, debt, until they die. And to cap it all, the amount the children will be left with after they've paid back the loan and interest, will probably be enough to only buy them a garden shed each. The average house price is more like £150k, and by the time we homeowners pay for repairs and maintenance (new boilers; roof repairs; repointing etc) as well as care home fees the kids will be lucky to get anything. I forgot about homeowners having to pay for their nursing homes. It wouldn't surprise me if banks start expecting their children and grand-children to pay off the mortgage in years to come because of the cost of mortgages.
