How are Sheffield crime rates calculated?

I keep hearing the powers that be reassuring us all that Sheffield is still one of the safest cities in the UK yet after another bad week for the city one again i'm left questioning how this could possibly be?.

Am I right in thinking that they calculate how safe Sheffield is by number of incidents per population?

If so this method doesn't work for me. I would much rather they calculated on number of incidents full stop because without scaremongering I do genuinely personally believe that the amount of violent crimes in Sheffield are getting worse upon worse, year by year!.

How can we seriously continue to believe Sheffield to be an extremely safe place when if this board is to be believe this week alone we have seen 4 separate incidents in 4 different locations consisting of 2 stabbing incidents and 2 shooting incidents?

We can continue to use the terms isolated and targeted to our hearts content however this is far from re-assuring.

I know these sorts of posts frequent the board more and more often however surely this says something about how the general population of the city feel as a whole.

Again I don't mean to sound the alarms or scaremonger I am just airing my own views and questions.

Crime rates are really tricky things, difficult to interpret difficult to accurately gather and easy to manipulate. They cna rise or fall due to many number of reasons and not all of them have anything to do with how effective you are or how many real life crimes are being commited.

I dont think your suggestion is a very good one because its too simplistic and misleading.

That means that larger places will always be considered more dangerous, when the principle reason for more crime incidents is that they have many more people to commit those crimes. You arent comparing like with like.

Does the OP read the local press for Manchester, Liverpool etc. to get a comparison in levels of crime?

that doesn't really help as it depends on the papers editorial team deciding that a crime is worth reporting, which to some extent depends on what else has happened during the day.

To be quite honest with you I don't live in Manchester, Liverpool, etc therefore I don't really care how bad the crime is in those particular cities as such. Obviously violent crime or crime full stop is saddening regardless of where it is but my prime concern is Sheffield.

Violent crime has become a frequent occurrence in recent years and I find it deeply saddening and upsetting. I'm no spring chicken to the city, born and bred with decades of experience. I simply can't ever remember it being this bad, in particular the use of weapons. As I said I haven't started this thread with any intentions what so ever in scaremongering and considering the weeks events I am trying to remain as tactful as possible. The only thing I have on my mind right now are the serious events of this week along with the multiple armed robberies that we hear about, it seems so form of violent crime features in the city on a weekly basis these days therefore I just wondered how crime statistics were calculated.

Well they certainly aren't calculated from looking at the events of one weekend where more than normal seems to have happened.
