Parking enforcement vehicles (spy cars) to be banned

I could think of more important things that the Government should be telling councils to do.

Interferering with the detail of what councils do is ludicrous.

A centrist approach. Despite being a conservative led government, they just can't help themselves and feel a need to interfere at local level.

Surely this is the sort of issue that can be determined locally. If we don't like it we could vote our local government out.

Councils always trot out the argument that income from parking fines has to be spent on the roads and transport. But surely every penny they re-invest in tis way frees up money from their other budgets that would have had to be spent on repairs etc that can now be spent elsewhere?

Look into the story deeper and it reads like a non-policy from Pickles (remember his return of the weekly bin collection pledge?).

It looks like he has quietly dropped the daft "15 minute grace period" idea for parking on double yellows. That was never going to be enforceable and was even panned by the motoring organizations as a bad idea.

Councils will still be able to use CCTV near schools, bus lanes and bus stops, which is exactly what they are currently used for in Sheffield anyway. It doesn't sound like he’s banned cameras catching those who queue across yellow boxes and block junction, a major cause of jams, as the wording says “critical routes” can still be covered by CCTV". No mention of banning the cameras fitted to buses that identify cars blocking stops either.

Pickles goes on to say "CCTV spy cars can be seen lurking on every street raking in cash for greedy councils " Can’t see any “lurking” on the streets round here Mr P, more spin.

Isn't it strange that the party that tells us we must keep looking for more efficient ways of working wants to replace an efficient technology with more bodies, unless it’s another of their job creation schemes?

I don't see the problem with have the camera cars. After all if you park legally you've nothing to worry about.

Errm...

... I think the most important quality of a good "lurker" is that you can't see them.

Great. The government get something right for a change.

Whats wrong with parking enforcement anyhow. So you think you should be able to park where you like? It just seems that motorists complain and the government bend over backwards for them. Its same with speed cameras. Why cant motorists just follow the rules and pay up if they dont.

I agree, as I said earlier, park legally and there's no issue. If you park like a **** then you fully deserve everything coming your way
