megalithic Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Well not really, but i know there's a few on here who hate those pesky two wheelers, so here's a quote for you. "Plans to increase speeds on a section of one of Sheffield’s busiest roads have been shelved – as it would save just seconds. Raising the limit from 30mph to 40mph on Penistone Road, between Infirmary Road to Capel Street, was agreed in principle as part of a £5 million scheme to ease congestion. However, cyclists’ concerns about the impact on air quality and safety were raised at a highways meeting in April and Sheffield Council officers agreed to look again into the benefits of changing the limit before proceeding with the scheme." Let em have it.
The Joker Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I find the A61 Penistone Road baffling (maybe I'm just not very bright) but with all those traffic lights, junctions and speed cameras lining the route, I rarely go above 30 on there anyway
Bludragonfly Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 This would be the ideal road for a variable speed limit. It makes no sense at all for it be 30mph at 7am on a Sunday morning If it was in Rotherham this would have been a 40mph road years ago - if Fitzwilliam Road can be a 40 in Rotherham why can't Penistone Road? Fitz Rd is single file, has houses down one side, traffic joining from side roads without traffic lights so in some ways more hazardous than Penistone Rd
Allen Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 The 30mph limit amazes me too. It's a dual carriageway FGS! Travel from the city all the way to the Wednesday Ground at 30mph...turn right up Herries Road, under the five arches bridge.....now you can travel at 40mph on a single carriageway through a housing estate, passing an old folks home! There's no logic to it.
Dan_Ashcroft Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I think this is possibly the most bizarre speed limit I've ever come across. It undermines the respect for all speed limits when they can be so blatantly irrational.

*Wallace* Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Wonderful how how a group of people who pay sod all to use the roads dictate the speed limit for those that do.
Doom Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 The stretch between Morrisons and the bottom of Netherthorpe is easy to reach 40 mph most of the time. I've just come along that stretch myself in the last half hour and had I wanted, I could comfortably have travelled at more than 40 mph. I often find myself in the outside lane on that stretch being undertaken by cars wanting to exceed 40 mph and I can't really blame them for wanting to go faster, because on such an open, clear stretch of road 30 mph feels painfully slow. As for the pollution issue, what a load of rubbish. I would think more pollution is caused by streams of cars getting stuck behind bicycles travelling at 15 mph. It sounds like SCC are using the poor old cyclist as their excuse for not wanting to increase the limit on a stretch of road that I'm sure most people would agree should be 40 mph. Regards Doom ---------- Post added 16-06-2014 at 07:49 ---------- Wonderful how how a group of people who pay sod all to use the roads dictate the speed limit for those that do. Do you think that it could be SCC just using the cyclists as an excuse no to do it? I'd be interested to know how many cyclists have objected to this move. Cyclone above is a cyclist and he's stated he'd be happy to see the increase. If the Council have made this U turn, considering how many tens of thousands of people this will impact on, I'd like to think the decision hasn't been made on the basis of concerns from a few dozen cyclists. whiteowl Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I used to work on that side of the city and used to use Penistone road daily. Assuming the limits are still the same as 10 years ago, they did seem somewhat odd. 40 mph where there are houses down to Wadsley Bridge, then it dropped to 30 where there are virtually no houses all the way along to Netherthorpe, then back up to 40 going up St Philips where the flats are. Most odd.
