Would Iraq be better off if Saddam was still in charge?

Given the current situation in Iraq and the changes it has experienced since the Bush/Blair led bombing and invasion would the Iraqi people be safer had Saddam not been deposed and hanged?

yes it would, saddam kept a lid on things, yes he was a dictator and adespot but there was order, now its out and out chaos and terrorism is growing by the second

But Saddam prevented Iraq from descending into becoming an Islamic state governed by Sharia Law. Surely the people should be rejoicing that they will be allowed to live in acordance with their god's principals.

He did gas thousands of his own civillians though amongst many other horrible things. Difference was he did it quietly with men in uniform not loudly on the back of pickup trucks then sticking the footage on YouTube.

He knew his people he kept the country in line,he may have been a savage evil dictator but he never interfered with us,deposing him was a big mistake and I guess we will have to do it all over again and more of our lads will have to go there and fight ,if the Yanks start they will more than likely drag us into it again...deja vu...

It would be better if only because what it has become threatens more war and stability for years to come. There could soon be an Al Qaeda-linked government in control of at least part of what is now Iraq. With support from Iran, part of Syria and elsewhere there is massive potential for years of conflict. Blair and Bush will always be responsible for this.

I suspect these guys were always going to be fighting someone to impose their religion on them. At least at the moment they are fighting amongst themselves. A terrorist government is always better than just plain terrorists. They have a country which can be bombed until it turns to dust.

An Iraqi woman friend of ours who has family over in Iraq says life was better under saddams rule.

I have said it before, western style democracy doesn't work everywhere so maybe if we stopped trying to impose it on Eastern countries we wouldn't have the problems we now see in Iraq.

That is very true....You cant just impose "democracy" on people that are not used to it/ willing for it

Perhaps we should stop trying to impose our lifestyle on them and they should stop trying to impose their's on us.

But the problems we see in Iraq are pretty much their problems now. If Saddam had developed a nuclear weapon he would quite probaly have used it against us. If they got one now they would just use it on themselves.
