The Liberal Democrats - all discussion here please

Recommended Posts

I understood last time, that the Lib Dems could chose who they sided with.

Even though they had more in common with the Labour PartyThey chose the honourable option because the Conservatives had the majority of the vote. They were then used by the Conservatives as a scape goat and shafted as soon as it suited them.

If they havw a choice will they make the same mistake twice?

Of course as its the only way Swinson will get anywhere near power. But what people and especially women should take on board is that when the Lib Dem coalition was in existence one of the big Lib Dem policies drawn up by Steve Webb the Liberal Democrat pension minister was the raising of the pension age which was later agreed to by the coalition, and then implemented by Osborn.

The Conservatives did nothing, it is just the media that go for the little guys.

The Tories, Ken Clarke beat us to it, 1993 actually. But difficult choices, people could always save their own money and retire whenever they want.

I am amazed that a fast-talking politician, Kenneth Clarke, has got away with his decision to raise the pension age for women from 60 to 65 with so little public hostility.

David Cameron today(2009) said that he would take action to stop women's retirement age rising too quickly as he clarified Tory proposals to make people work until the age of 66 in a bid to cut Britain's budget deficit.

My goodness me, you're not saying that the media pick on people are you?Y

So why do you think the Lib Dems renaged on their most popular headline policy,  to abolish student fees?

Because the tories wouldn’t have it and they had the whip hand. They thought  that they could temper Tory excesses and maybe they did with some issues, but they lost all integrity and the tories binned all the better ideas as soon as they could anyway.

Given that, I don’t blame swinson for not lining up potential coalitions straight off the bat.

It was just one of many, students would have noticed it more. We were just a small party that moderated the Conservative, look how far right the Tories are now.

One of our policies was "The Liberal Democrats have pledged an extra £2.5bn to cut class sizes to 20 in primary schools." We could not do that either, because we were just the smaller party.

The Lib Dems DID NOT moderate the Tories austerity agenda - they enabled it.

A smaller party with principles would have walked away from a coalition when it meant unleashing terrible austerity on the poorest and weakest and reneging on their most popular policy.

Ministerial cars mean so much more to Lib Dems than principles or the poor.

Liberal Democrats accused of 'intentionally misinforming' voters with campaign leaflets

The Liberal Democrats have been accused of "intentionally misinforming" voters after publishing a series of misleading election campaign leaflets. Leaflets sent out by the Lib Dems in their target seat of Putney cite "YouGov polling for Putney" showing the party level-pegging in the seat with the Conservatives. However, a spokesperson for the pollsters YouGov told Business Insider that they had not carried out any polling in the constituency and "would not defend" how it had been presented in the leaflet.

Beware Lib Dem election leaflets. This party will stop at nothing to get back their ministerial cars.

The Lib Dems only have one policy that might sway people to vote for them and that is their pledge to cancel Brexit. I don't believe Jo Swinson has the experience or the skill to handle the fallout from that. The best thing they can hope for is another coalition at best and that didn't work out too well last time did it?

You're right, it didn't. So keen to punish the Lib Dems, their dear leader in particular, were the chattering classes of Hallam that they ended up punishing themselves. Ha ha.
